The liturgy of Saint Basil, bishop of Caesarea in
Cappadocia, dates from 370 - 379. It is still
celebrated in the Orthodox world, alongside the later
and more concise liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom.
It is characterized by a very long “anaphora”
(prayer of the offering), which is accompanied in
Slavic traditions by equally developed
“responses”.
This “anaphora” ends with a specific hymn to
the Mother of God.
