He beÂgan his muÂsicÂal career singÂing at St. George?s Church in Long IsÂland, New York, then at age 18 beÂcame orÂganÂist at Christ Church in NorÂwich, ConÂnecÂtiÂcut. He went on to serve as orÂganÂist and choirÂmasÂter at the First PresÂbyÂteriÂan Church, BrookÂlyn, New York (1880-1941); proÂfesÂsor of muÂsic at PackÂer ColÂleÂgiÂate InsÂtitÂute; warÂden of the Guild of AmerÂiÂcan OrÂganÂists; and vice-preÂsiÂdent of the DeÂpartÂment of MuÂsic at the BrookÂlyn InsÂtitÂute of Arts and SciÂencÂes.
