McIntosh atÂtendÂed JackÂson CollÂege in CoÂlumÂbia, TenÂnesÂsee, and stuÂdied muÂsic unÂder Asa EvÂerÂett. In 1875, he was apÂpointÂed head of the MuÂsic DeÂpartÂment at VanÂderÂbilt UnÂiÂverÂsiÂty in NashÂville, TenÂnesÂsee. In 1877, he joined the faÂculÂty of EmÂoÂry CollÂege, OxÂford, GeorgÂia. In 1895, he left EmÂoÂry CollÂege to deÂvote his time to the R. M. McÂInÂtosh PubÂlishÂing ComÂpaÂny. He alÂso served as muÂsic edÂitÂor of the MethÂodÂist EpisÂcoÂpal Church South PubÂlishÂing House for over 30 years.
