Late in his life, composer J. Rosamond Johnson (Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing) submitted to his longtime publisher, E.B. Marks, a list of songs that would comprise a volume of his best early popular songs written with his pre-1910 partner Bob Cole and his brother, James Weldon Johnson (Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man). That list was never put into print...until now. Featuring an introductionby Dr. Thomas Riis (Just Before Jazz) and several rare photos, this new compilation is the latest legacy offering from the Marks archive, which contains a rich heritage of turn-of-the-century African-American, and thus distinctly American, pre-jazz-era popular song. Includes: Ain't Dat Scan'lous * Big Indian Chief * The Big Red Shawl * The Bleeding Moon * Congo Love Song * The Countess of Alagazam * Fishing * I Don't Want to Be No Actor Man No Mo' * I'll Always Love Old Dixie * I'll Keep a Warm Spot in My Heart for You * I've Got Troubles of My Own * The Katy-Did, the Cricket and the Frog * Lazy Moon * Lit'l Gal * Louisiana Lize * Lovely Daughter of Allah * Ma Mississippi Belle * The Maiden with the Dreamy Eyes * Mudder Knows * My Heart's Desiah is Miss Mariah * My Castle on the Nile * Nobody's Lookin' but de Owl an' de Moon * Oh, Didn't He Ramble * The Old Flag Never Touched the Ground * On the Road to Monterey * The Pathway of Love * Roll Them Cotton Bales * Save It for Me! * The Spirit of the Banjo! * Sugar Babe * Two Eyes * Under the Bamboo Tree * When de Jack O'Lantern Starts to Walk About * When It's All Goin' Out, and Nothin' Comin' In * Who Do You Love?

Known as the Black National Anthem, Jarrett Johnson along with Alvin Chea created and recorded a fabulous a cappella version and placed it on YouTube, which went viral and to their amazement was nominated for a Grammy. Next, Professor Michele Jenson from Azusa Pacific University told her friend, Jarrett, she wanted to create a choral version for her chamber choir. Choral conducting legend Andre Thomas heard it and wanted it in his new choral series with Gentry Publications. And that is the story of how this amazing rendition came to be a new publication for choirs everywhere.

The poem “Lift Every Voice and Sing†was written by acclaimed African-American poet James Weldon Johnson in 1900 and set to music byhis brother John Rosamond Johnson in 1905. The Edward B. Marks Music Company first published the song in 1921, which remains strongly associated with social justice and patriotism, particularly in African-American communities. While at one time it could be found pasted to the back of some hymnals used in African-American churches, today the song is formally printed under headings such as“national songs or“social justice”in many modern hymnals. Other versions include a concert setting published in 1978 for SATB chorus and piano by Roland Carter, a setting by Hale Smith for SATB chorus and orchestra also dating from the 70s, and a modern R&B recorded version released in 1990 featuring Dione Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Take 6. This newly engraved edition of the Hale Smith will make the music accessible to more organizations.

Appalachian fiddle music, based on the musical traditions of the people who settled in the mountainous regions of the southeastern United States, is widely-known and played throughout North America and parts of Europe because of its complex rhythms, its catchy melodies, and its often-ancient-sounding stylistic qualities. The authors explore the lives and music of 43 of the classic Appalachian fiddlers who were active during the first half of the 20th century. Some of them were recorded commercially in the 1920s, such as Gid Tanner, Fiddlin? John Carson, and Charlie Bowman. Some were recorded by folklorists from the Library of Congress, such as William Stepp, Emmett Lundy, and Marion Reece. Others were recorded informally by family members and visitors, such as John Salyer, Emma Lee Dickerson, and Manco Sneed. All of them played throughout most of their lives and influenced the growth and stylistic elements of fiddle music in their regions. Each fiddler has been given a chapter with a biography, several tune transcriptions, and tune histories. To show the richness of the music, the authors make a special effort to show the musical elements in detail, but also acknowledge that nothing can take the place of listening. Many of the classic recordings used in this book can be found on the web, allowing you to hear and read the music together.
