March of the Three Kings for Trombone Duet arranged at the Advanced Intermediate level. The Crusades, those religious expeditions to rescue the holy places in Palestine from the Muslims, created an enormous interest in both faith and fighting in the Middle Ages. French peasants from Provence in the 13th century, when the tune for this March of the Kings was being sung and danced to, must have endowed the Three Kings of the Christmas story with all the virtues and appearance of their own folk heroes nearer at hand. These were the French dukes, clad in gleaming armor, carrying brilliant banners and bejeweled shields, who fought for the Pope far more willingly than they would have for the lives of their own serfs. Hence the martial references in this text, sung to a tune that is perhaps even older than the verses. Georges Bizet, composer of the opera Carmen, used the same tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L’Arlesienne (The Woman from Aries). The March of the Three Kings has been arranged in the trombone friendly key of c minor at the advanced intermediate level.Performance time: approx. 2 minutes. Middle Branch Music #868256. Published by Middle Branch Music (A0.1276536). This set of short pieces was composed as a sequel of sorts to Slidin', my earlier collection of ten solo brass works. There are technical similarities between the two sets, in that both pieces incorporate techniques such as legato and staccato playing, slurs and glissandi. However, in Five-Spot I have employed a slightly larger range, somewhat more challenging rhythms and have used all 7 positions. Therefore, I classed the pieces as being of advanced beginner or intermediate difficulty. I have also included intermediate-level piano accompaniment. These pieces may be played separately or as a set. The tempi are meant as guides to indicate proper performance speed, but are certainly subject to modification as needed. They are also meant to be fun! Meat Salad for Solo Bass Trombone

?Meat Salad? is a new piece for solo bass trombone commissioned by Ilan Morgenstern of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Inspired in part by the slap-bass stylings of artists like Bootsy Collins and in part by the inimitable trombone playing of ?Funky Fred? Wesley, this piece is simultaneously a groovy crowd-pleaser and an acrobatic showstopper. ?Meat Salad? gives the advanced bass trombonist the opportunity unleash his/her full repertoire of tricks including: trills, growls, turns, glissandi, extended range, and just about every type articulation imaginable.
This piece was premiered in August 2019 at the 2nd annual Vancouver Trombone Week, with the composer adding an emphatic (if unsophisticated) cowbell accompaniment to Morgenstern?s bass trombone.
For advanced performers.
Below is a short track of Meat Salad brilliantly performed by Vancouver Symphony Bass Trombonist Ilan Morgenstern. Al Circo (To the Circus) for Trombone and Harp

Cherry Classics Music Al Circo (To the Circus) was written in 1968 by David Stout, dedicated to Emory Remington and was premiered by Trombonist Fred Boyd on a recital at the Eastman School of Music with Carolyn Kuban performing on the Harp. The work is in two movements, both in a lighter nature and humorous. Mute colors are an important part of the mood of the work.
David Stout writes about his work:
"I wrote this when I was a junior at the Eastman School of Music. Fred Boyd, a bass trombonist, wanted to play it. At the bottom of page 4, on the trombone part, where it says ?hand in bell? he had a problem. With a bass trombone he couldn?t reach around far enough to put his hand in deep enough to distort the tone enough. So, he calls me into his practice room one day and tells me to turn around so I can?t see him. He then plays that passage. ?Is that the sound you want?? he asks. ?Yeah that?s it. Perfect!? I reply. I turn around. He shows me a large plastic fish that he had used to shove in the bell. So on his part, we mark those notes, ?con sardino.?
Dr. Louis Setzer, the author of Solo Literature for Trombone and Harp - An Annotated Bibliography, rediscovered the work and received permission from the composer to edit the composition from the original pencil manuscript. He believes this work is the oldest known original composition for Trombone and Harp
This fine work is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 7 minutes in length. Two Sacred Pieces for Trombone Ensemble Choir

Cherry Classics Music Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) wrote the Musikalische Exequien, opus 7 (SWV 279-281) for the funeral of Prince Heinrich Posthumus von Reuss (1572-1635). Prince Heinrich?s widow and sons commissioned the work upon his death and provided Schütz with Bible verses as the text, which were also inscribed on the prince?s coffin.
Two of the three parts of the Musikalische Exequien have been arranged for 8-part Trombone Ensemble in two different choirs. The first piece, Motet is reminiscent of Gabrieli's Sonatas. The second piece, Canticum Sineonis is dense, rich, and evokes deep spiritual suffering and loss.
Two Sacred Pieces have been exquisitely edited and arranged by Kenneth Biggs for moderately advanced performers and work very well with 2 Alto Trombones, 4 Tenor Trombones, and 2 Bass Trombones. O'Neil - Machinery, Four Pieces for 6-part Trombone Ensemble & Percussion

by Cherry Classics Music Stuart O'Neil has written a new work entitled "Machinery" in 4 movements for 6-part Trombone ensemble and Percussion. Below is the composer's explanation of his exciting and dramatic work."The four pieces in this collection are written for 6-part trombone ensemble and accompanying percussion; they may be performed together or individually. Each piece is a study in the trombone?s distinct glissando capability and should be approached in a relatively aggressive, but not overly serious, manner: concert music, but with considerable jazz-rock influence, especially in regards to rhythm and dynamics. The pieces are similar, but each has its own character."1. Machine is a well-oiled, highly-functioning machine, with all parts efficiently working together.2. Rush Hour is a hectic, busy traffic scene, but somewhat cartoon-like.3. Suspension Bridge is strong metal under extreme stress, straining but not breaking.4. Assembly Line is a factory conveyor belt: loud, busy, with lots of heavy machinery. This 10 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. Ran Whitley has beautifully arranged another ten of the Melodious Etudes, numbers 41-50 for Trombone Quartet. All in bass clef, these are appropriate for intermediate to advanced performers. Classics Music Petros Shoujounian, an Armenian/Canadian composer has written Twelve Duos for Trombones based on the folksong collection of the Armenian priest Komitas, known as the founder of the Armenian national school of music and one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology. Below are comments from the composer about his inspiration in writing these Twelve Duos for Trombones.
My interest in the collected works of Komitas's ethnographical songs was aroused when I was introduced to Bela Bartok's similar works followed by Alan Hovhaness's huge creative world. Bartok completed his project having at his disposal a large collection of ethnographic music, while Hovhannes studied the wealth of Komitas's music with great interest. It is difficult to say to what extent the Armenian underpinning of Hovhannes's works is nurtured by Komitas's musical world, but his classical interpretation of the Armenian ethnographical music created a huge interest in the listener. Needless to say, there is also Aram Katchaturian's legacy, which at its core has the ardent presence of the Armenian spirit, nurtured by Komitas's very existence.
Komitas has left a collection of about 3,000 cleaned versions of the ethnographic song and dance pieces, of which 1,700 have reaches us, about 400 of which have been activated. I believe that in those beautiful musical fragments reside the power to be revived, once we enrich them with colorful musical instruments and unbounded polyphonic imagination.
This is the motivation behind my own work and these Twelve Duos for Trombones: to make the essence of our ethnographic music accessible through Komitas.
These Twelve Duos are appropriate for advanced performers and may be performed on Alto, Tenor, and Bass Trombones.
