This 9-minute motet in which the Buddha-to-be Dharmakara praises His master, Lokeshvaraja Buddha and vows to become the Savior of all Beings (namely, Amida Buddha). The music beings with an extended recitative/aria by solo soprano, and proceeds to the full choral ensemble to its conclusion. The MP3 Audio Clip is a computer-generated soundfile of the entire work. The music is completely tonal and traditional, suitable for good amateur choirs and professional choruses alike.Words from the Larger Sutra on Amida Buddha expounded by Shakyamuni Buddha some 2500 years ago in India.[Setting: Many ages ago, Dharmakara Bhikshu (in his stage before becoming Amida Buddha) declares to his Master, Buddha Lokeshvararaja, his intention to create a Pure Land wherein all suffering beings can be saved.]Text (slightly abridged):Then appeared a Buddha named Lokeshvararaja, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Possessed of Wisdom and Practice, Perfected One, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Men, Master of Gods and Men, Buddha and World-Honored One.At that time there was a king, who, having heard the Buddha's exposition of the Dharma, rejoiced in his heart and awakened aspiration for the highest, perfect Enlightenment. He renounced his kingdom and the throne, and became a monk named Dharmakara. Having superior intelligence, courage and wisdom, he distinguished himself in the world. This ‚Suite’ is not one of my ‘epic’ instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom. Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family); the string section in the Sarabande; in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc.; and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously. This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses; it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights – acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. Latin.In the tradition of Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata, Kevin Siegfried’s Vidimus stellam (We Have Seen His Star) is a radiant and uplifting work for SATB Chorus and Brass Quintet or Organ. Using traditional Latin texts drawn from Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, Vidimus stellam evocatively traces the theme of Light through the Christmas season. In the choral parts, an expressive lyricism predominates, revealing Siegfried’s affinity for chant and early music. A balance between accessibility and challenge is maintained throughout. This is the fourth movement, Surge, illuminare, based on the Epiphany text, Rise, shine...for the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. Like the third movement, this begins dramatically with the men first, then the women, proclaiming the opening text. At measure 11, the tempo launches into Vivo, with a 3+3+2 feeling and mixed meters. Rhythmic, dance-like, and fun. The organ accompaniment sometimes doubles, sometimes punctuates. The movement ends much as it began, in the dramatic slow statement of Surge, illuminare..

Here is a detailed description of the work by composer, David F. Wilborn.Elysian Fields was written for the Elysian Trombone Consort. Members of the ensemble include: Timothy Anderson, Chad Arnow, Nathan Siler, and Brett Shuster. The work was created as part of a recital feature that took place at the 2021 International Trombone Festival entitled A New Initiative II: Trombone Quartet Music by Composers of Color. The Elysian Trombone Consort created the New Initiative concert series as a vehicle to promote new and existing works by composers from under-represented gender, ethnic and social communities. The concert series aims to highlight the creative scholarship of under-represented artists. The ultimate goal is to encourage the programming and creation of more compositions by these scholars.The title Elysian Fields (also known as Elysium) is a venue in mythology that references a final resting place in the afterlife for the Greek Gods. Although Elysium was originally designated for Greek Gods and mortals who may have been related to the Gods, the venue was also accessible to certain mortals by the Gods for their heroic deeds or by those who enjoyed favor with the Gods. Images of Elysium are said to have radiant sunshine, rolling hills and, according to Homer in his Odyssey, the most pleasant weather conditions – no snow, nor heavy storm, nor ever rain.The music Elysian Fields attempts to capture the frivolity of living in Elysium. It portrays the radiant sunshine and the spirit of joy. The place is by all accounts a surreal landscape where sun rays softly beam down on the fields and, in some cases, it emanates as a heavenly backdrop. It is a place of everlasting happiness, serenity, and peace.
