First sung in the 15th Century and first published int he 16th Century, this hymn is still popular in the 21st Century. In multiple different contexts, the hymn compares the beauty of Christmas to that of a lovely rose. The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish. This piece features multiple subtle musical sensibilities and a gentle introduction into the world of mixed meter. I sincerely hope you enjoy this arrangement! Brass Band Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1095398 Composed by William Grant Still. Arranged by Richard Decker. 20th Century,Blues,Classical,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,World. 61 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #699415. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1095398). This is a brilliant arrangement of the first movement Longing of William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony for a brass choir of four B-flat trumpets, four horns in F, three trombones, euphonium and tuba. William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in October 1931 at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the melancholy flavor of the Blues to the symphony. For William Grant Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution, separate from the spiritual and popular jazz, and he wanted to incorporate it into a symphonic work based on Western classical symphonic instrumentation and forms. As part of the early 20th Century Harlem Renaissance in New York City, this work was enthusiastically received across the USA and overseas. Pair this brass choir arrangement of the first movement Longing with the third movement Humor also at Charles Decker Music Press to enliven a concert with colorful rhythms, soulful melodies and blues harmonies. Beyond brass ensemble programs feature your band or orchestra brass section on this memorable and exciting arrangement. “The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Charles Decker Music Press #6689647. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.817178). Revered as one of the greatest German composers of the 17th century, Heinrich Schütz embraced his early studies with Giovanni Gabrieli and developed his own dramatic style of antiphonal music for voices and instruments. Originally written for the centenary of the Reformation in 1617 to honor then Emperor Matthias and his family, this engaging composition translated as Praise the Lord for He is Kind was published in his Psalmen Davids (Op. 2) in 1619 and translates well four centuries later, giving today's brass choirs the opportunity to recreate those glorious antiphonal choir sounds of the early Baroque period. Beyond brass ensemble concerts, consider adding some musical fireworks to your next band or orchestra concerts with this impressive and memorable showcase for your brass section. If rock music had been invented in the Renaissance, it would have sounded like this modal marvel. Cool lyrics layout the history of string instruments. Watch/Listen:https://youtu.be/jlAZuVvFt2MAbout Creative Strings Eye players read music. Ear players improvise. Today’s well-rounded students need instruction in both. Creative Strings is a collection of works designed to lead beginning to advanced students through their first experiences as improvisers. Each piece is composed of four parts that can roughly be described as melody, harmony, accompaniment and bass line. All four parts are available for the violin, viola and cello. The bass has one part. An optional piano part is also provided. The the ideal distribution is Vln. 1, Vln. 2, Vla. 3, and Cello 4. However the intentionally redundant parts allow for flexible combinations of instruments. If for example, no violas or cellos are available, a violin choir could still cover the parts. The same would hold true for a non-traditional quartet such as 3 violins and 1 cello or any other grouping. Overlapping parts can also be used to equalize an unbalanced orchestra such as 20 violins and 1 viola player by having some of the violins double the viola part. Moro Lasso

Kyle Skrivanek #2891019. Published by Kyle Skrivanek (A0.980056). Moro Lasso is a prime example of the advanced chromaticism employed by the late Italian Renaissance composer, Carlo Gesualdo. Gesualdo, a prince of Venosa, is infamously remembered for murdering his first wife and her lover. However, his legacy to the world of music is undeniable. His six books of madrigals employ harmonies which the world would not witness again until Wagner, some 200 years later. During the later part of his life it was rumored Gesualdo suffered from a deep depression, perhaps from guilt. This is reflected in the first line of this madrigal which translates to, I am dying, wretched, in my grief. This arrangement maintains all of the original material with some repetition for length and musical effect. It is playable by high school level bands.
