This is provision beyond words, beyond comprehension, and well beyond what this piece can say. I truly hope you enjoy this piece and give glory back to God for his provision.

It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.Songs of Comfort and Hope is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of AntonÃn Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation. You know that I usually find it difficult to renounce the original piano versions, especially when the composer didn't orchestrated them, but I recommend you to listen to Anna Netrebko singing this song with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.You might wonder why I don't share this version here, there are two reasons: first, I can’t do without that beautiful piano; two, I chose my version months ago (something that lately happens quite often). I said before that Zdes' khorosho is between contemplation and passion; Most of singers enhance the most contemplative perspective, that's the case of the lovely performance by Anna Netrebko. Others sing the most passionate version, like the one we’re listening today. Its tempo is faster than usual, it lasts about a minute and a half; maybe it would surprise you if you're used to slower versions. This piece depicts the story of the Penitent Thief, one of the two other men who hung on a cross beside Jesus, as told in the Bible: One of the thieves who were hanged by Jesus was hurling abuse at him, saying, 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!' But the other answered, and rebuking him, said, 'Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? We indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.' And he was saying, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!' And Jesus said to him, 'Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.' (Luke 23:39-43) I initially set out to portray the scene from a narrative perspective. As I began composing and felt the story resonate more and more with my own spiritual experiences, I decided to shift the focus onto what I imagined the emotional and spiritual experiences of the Penitent Thief were during this brief but transformative interaction with Jesus right before death. While the passage does not describe his internal experience, I imagine that Jesus’ extension of kindness and mercy, along with the promise “Today you will be with me in Paradise,†profoundly impacted him. In composing this, I hoped to convey that transformative encounter. Ultimately, The Penitent Thief depicts an experience familiar to many Christians: that of a lost and broken soul discovering Jesus offers the truth and salvation they long for. To capture the element of dialog, I envisioned the Viola as the Penitent Thief and the Piano as Jesus. Each has a distinct theme/motif. On the cross, the Penitent Thief is consumed by shame, sorrow, and fear of death. His demeanor shifts between moments of quiet contemplation and visceral emotional outbursts. Facing imminent death, he yearns for redemption and truth. He looks at Jesus hanging next to him, blameless and holy. He feels admiration and praise and is overcome by penitence and humility. He calls out, half in desperation, half in worship: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom…†Jesus, moved by his penitence and belief, responds with kindness and mercy, extending salvation: Today you will be with me in Paradise.†The Penitent Thief imagines Paradise and hopes for this to hold true. His hope becomes briefly overshadowed by lingering doubt and fear. Silence falls. Then, as the hour of death arrives, the man reaches out again and clings to Jesus’ promise, this time with more desperation. His soul suddenly becomes filled with joy, finding the fulfillment of longing, bound with Christ, and knowing that he will soon be at rest in Paradise. At peace, the man gazes upward, gives his final sputtering breath, and his soul departs this world.

Premiered in Luxembourg, in December 2010, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos.Program Notes:This piece is named for Yemanya (pronounced Yeh-MAHN-jah or Yeh-MAHN-jee), the Brazilian/African nurturing mother goddess of the ocean. She's known as a protector, supplier, and one who grants wishes. Every December 31st, Brazilians celebrate Yemanya by casting white flowers and miniature boats into the sea. If Yemanya grants your wish, her waves will swallow the boat and if she denies the wish the boat will wash up on shore. Yemanya teaches us to dive in at the very moment of golden opportunity, to enjoy the rhythms of life, and to allow all doubts to be washed away. The fluid, oceanic themes of the instruments represent the flow of the water and magic of Yemanya. The piece starts off with a soft wind chime accompanied by gong/tam-tam. Then the vibraphone enters mysteriously as the main theme that drives the whole piece as it subtly changes. The double bass creates a rhythmic pulse beneath the other sections. The gentle melodies in the flute dance around jazzy articulations in the trumpets and saxophones. There's an interplay of Afro-Cuban beats in the marimba and a bossa nova rhythm between the temple blocks and xylophone. Throughout the piece I have tried to capture the water's motion and the ever-changing face of the sea. As the vibraphone returns to the original melody, we are reminded of Yemanya's eternal beauty and peaceful nature.

The Piano Trio op. 59 was composed in 2008. The work was inspired by Joseph Haydn&rsquo.s Die Schoepfung [The Creation].
China boasts a vast number of old myths and legends. The first thought that came into my mind was that of the Chinese myth of Pangu who cleaved the Chaos with an axe to be Heaven and Earth. I heard the story from the old people when I was a child. I should say that it was a fantastic moment when the story suddenly jumped into my mind while I appreciated Western music. There is no doubt that my ideology of music is influenced in many ways by Western culture, but it will always be rooted in my Chinese heritage.
