Offenbach (1819 - 1880), who was born in Germany, moved to Paris when he was a teenage boy and remained there for much of his life. He became especially famous as a composer of numerous operettas. and of one famous opera: Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). His operettas (or ‘musiquettes’) were often based on comical, or satirical librettos. He makes fun of Parisian daily life, dignitaries, the military, the pretentiousness of the Grand Opéra, and so on. In that respect, Offenbach’s operettas are not really comparable with those of his German-speaking contemporaries, for example, Franz Lehár and Johann Strauss the Younger. Musically speaking, we could callOffenbach’s operettas lively, funny, melodious and catchy. For La Belle Hélène, Offenbach drew from Greek mythology. The story is based on that of Helen of Troy, but is set in France, halfway through the 19th century; it has been turned into a satire on the élite of that time. The overture to La Belle Hélène was (and still is) very successful. Offenbach combined a number of arias and choruses from the operetta to give a taste of what is to follow. Many overtures which follow this form lack unity and structure. However, in this case the composition has been well thought-out.

For Three Aspects of Kurt Weill Peter Kleine Schaars took inspiration from the three periods that characterise the life of Weill - he successivelylived in Berlin, Paris and New York. One theme is used to create threetotally different atmospheres, a protest march against the fascists inBerlin, a French Musette (valse de Paris) and an American big bandstyle Broadway orchestra. Let this great work show the versatility ofyour concert band! The magnificent shows at the Moulin Rouge have left their mark on the collective imagination of all who read about them. For decades, a small but spectacular band formed one of the basic ingredients in this internationally famedcabaret theatre. With the first sounds of this composition by Peter Kleine Schaars, the exciting Parisian nightlife immediately comes to mind. The musette takes us to quartier Pigalle, the red-light district of Paris, and when thedoors of the Moulin Rouge open, we hear the recognizable rhythms of a contemporary disco: a combination of the rhythmic cells 8 / 4 and 3 / 14. In addition, the composition has been highlighted with a plentiful and varied use of rhythmic cell 5. Naturally, the themes and accompaniments have been divided equally among all parts. An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube Waltz) has had more success as a concert waltz than in the original choral version: since its victorious performance at the World Exhibition in Paris (1867) it has achieved fame world-wide. InAustria An der schönen blauen Donau has even become an unofficial anthem. At the traditional New Year’s concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic, this waltz—along with Radetzky March by Johann Strauss the Elder—is always played as anencore.

Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity’s best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remainsa mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises theRoman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra’s femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love thatMark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third andlast section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of thejealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar’s son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his ownlife. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History’s most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directedby Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary.

Variations Paris, 1846 was composed specifically for the 25th anniversary of ‘Brass-Aux-Saxes’ in 2014, coincidentally the 150th anniversary of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. As a result, Philip Sparke created this work to pay homage to Adolphe Sax. The work is a series of variations based on one original theme and gives the ‘fanfare orchestra’ a unique and rare setting you would usually only find in Belgium, the Netherlands and parts of Japan. Consequently, this shows all of the different aspects of the band through both colour and technique. Igor Stravinsky's musical setting of the Slavic fable The Firebird is one of the most ground-breaking orchestral works of the early 20th century. The reviews of the world premiere of the ballet at the Theatre National de l'Opera in Paris lauded Stravinsky's 'dazzling music in all shades of colour'; as a consequence, he composed two orchestral suites of his ballet. The version of 1919 is now published as a new edition with a modern notation and new orchestral material.
