Three Stones for female Voice was composed by Bent Sorensen in 2006. Dedicated Lore Lixenberg. Text: Anon. Programme note: Three stones is written on request by Lore Lixenberg to whom the little piece is dedicated. It is three very small songs for solo voice, but the singer is also - while singing - playing on 'traces of instruments' - Antique cymbal, violin and stones. The texts for all three songs are anonymous - the second song use an anonymous english love poem. In the first and the third songs the text istaken from estruscan writing on stones. What the text is about, nobody knows. Enigmas written in stone! Bent Sorensen.

All eighteen pieces in this collection are reliably dated to the reign of James I, and whether by named composers or anonymous ones, appear in sources other than the notable virginal books preserved in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The contents demonstrate the variety of forms in the keyboard repertoire of this period, from plainsong-based compositions to dances by Orlando Gibbons. The 'Pretty ways for young beginners to look on', possibly by Thomas Tomkins, are a fascinating example of music contemporary to the time, written with the didactic purpose of instructing musicians in the techniques of counterpoint. CONTENTS Prelude in d: Edward Gibbons Gaudent in caelis: Anon. Miserere: Anon. Upon a plainsong: Attrib. Orlando Gibbons Verse in G: Anon. Fantasia in a: John (or Thomas) Holmes Fantasia in G: Attrib. Orlando Gibbons Fantasia in G: Anon. Pavan in e: Anon. Galliard in C: Anon. Galliard in F: Anon. Fortune my foe: Anon. Alman in F: Thomas Tomkins Ballet in G: James Harding, arr. Anon. Coranto in C: Anon. Jig in G: Anon. Tomboy: Anon. Pretty ways for young beginners to look on: Anon. (Thomas Tomkins?).

Karen Marrolli provides an original melody for a text first published anonymously in London in 1878. Set in four parts with a fair amount of unison singing, the almost-folk-like tune is singable and satisfying. The text speaks of God's unending love which reaches for us even as we think we are the ones reaching out. Duration: 2:15.

Work commissioned by the National Audiovisual Institute, Poland on the occasion of the opening of the new venue. NANINANA for amplified keyboard instrument (preferably the classic Fender Rhodes Stage Piano) and string orchestra arranged in two symmetric groups, which was commissioned by the National Audivisual Institute for the opening of its new seat in 2015, is a composition on a special kind of absence. You could define this absence as perceivable, but difficult to understand. There are a lotof elements here which can illustrate this absence: from the interlude tones that are supposed to sound, yet not to the full, through the first appearance of the soloist with his part containing fragments of a composed melody which is mostly improvised, the second movement with harmony that can suggest hopeless longing for something that can never return, to the final culmination which is there, but seems as if it were not there... The work's motto is an anonymous poem that seems to refer to the concept of the so-called Schrodinger's cat, i.e. a hopeless attempt to rationally explain illogical phenomena in our world's microscale: Where, oh, where is that cat which is and is not there? For alto and tenor soloists, SATB chorus, and organ. Both the texts, an anonymous one from the 14th century and one attributed to Pope Clement XI, are prayers. Very simple choral sections, using sustained drones, alternate with more florid solos. The music is almost entirely modal and the textures are designed to 'resonate'.

Personent Hodie is a medieval Christmas carol from the larger work Piae Cantiones—a published collection of songs intended for cathedral schools in 16th century Finland. The original tune uses modality and plainchant to evoke the mysterious character of Christmastide. This rhythmic setting of Personent Hodie expresses the tune in compound meter, resulting in a joyful energy. The optional hand drum and finger cymbals complement the melody with an exciting, dance-like pulse.“Ideo, gloria in excelsis Deo!â€Therefore, glory be in the highest to God!Ideas for study and reflection: How might word stress be used to enhance overall musicality? What syllables should be stressed vs. unstressed? What dynamic markings are indicted in the score, and where do they occur? Listen to a recording of the original “Personent Hodie†written in 4/4 time. How are the two settings different? .

Libro de glosas is based on the Trattado de glosas by Diego Ortiz (1510 - ca. 1570). The intertextuality between different materials and musical techniques and processes of the 16th century was one of my main interests when I wrote this piece for the wonderful sound and quality of the Calefax ensemble. The intertextual relationships are as follows:Recercada I is based on the first chords of the chanson Doulce memoire by Pierre Sandrin. It is also used in Trattado de glosas.Recercada II is based on the incipit of the madrigal O felici occhi miei by Jacques Arcadelt. It is also used in Trattado de glosas.Recercada III is based on the ostinato Passamezzo antico. It is also used in Trattado de glosas.Recercada IV is freely based on the tenor La Spagna. It is also used in Trattado de glosas.Batalla (V) is a free composition in form of a battaglia and is based on some ostinati of Spanish origin as well as on an anonymous theme from the 16th century. There are also some bars of a batalla by Joseph Ximenez (18th century).Libro de glosas esta basada en el Trattado de glosas de Diego Ortiz (1510 - ca. 1570).
