Harmonische Fantasie über ein Thema von Tallis. Par KNOX GARTH. Thomas Tallis (...
(+)
Harmonische Fantasie über ein Thema von Tallis. Par KNOX GARTH. Thomas Tallis (1505–1585) was one of the great figures of English Renaissance music and the Third mode melody is probably his best known work, largely thanks to Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis. In the manner of an illuminated manuscript, I wanted to illuminate this fascinating theme in three ways: from behind with medieval techniques like the ‘hoquetus’ passage of the opening or the dance at letter B, from in front with more contemporary sounds (letter A and similar), and from above with the extensive use of high harmonics. Almost all the notes of the theme fall very neatly on the ‘natural’ harmonics of the viola strings, and my ambition was to combine the ‘normal’ notes of the viola with its soaring harmonics, creating a rich luminous soundscape which reflects the spirituality of the theme. Tallis’s melody returns repeatedly to the note B, and I interpreted this as a gentle invitation to simply be, in the sense of quiet moments of mediation. I decided to include a series of still points in the piece: the first one is in silence, the second reveals a note (B) that oscillates in a harmonic heartbeat, the third is a vibrating chord of B with harmonics, and on the last one the second viola tunes down the C string to B, then explores all the natural harmonics of this new world. The term still point is of course a reference to the words of T.S. Eliot in his Four Quartets: 'At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless; Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is.' (Garth Knox) / Date parution : 2024-01-06/ Répertoire / 2 Altos

Cheryl Frances-Hoad: From The Beginning Of The World: SATB: Vocal Score

(+)
'From the Beginning of the World was commissioned by the Cardinall’s Musick and premiered at Cadogan Hall on the 20th July 2015 in the first of the 2015 BBC Proms Chamber Music Concerts. The concert launched The Tallis Edition a new project by the ensemble with an aim to throw new light on Tallis’s work and part of the commission brief was that my new piece should be a homage to this great English polyphonist. I spent several weeks in libraries attempting to find a suitable text eventually settling on excerpts from Tycho Brahe’s German Treatise on the Great Comet of 1577. Whether Tallis knew about the comet is unknown of course but this seismic event to me seemed emblematic of all the great changes that occurred during his lifetime in areas such as religion the calendar and time-keeping (finding out that Tallis lived out his last days in Greenwich was an extra bonus). The text also seems to speak to contemporary times: whilst Brahe may have thought the comet’s birth would cause the sun to ‘bring unnatural heat’ nowadays we know that its ‘venom [will be] spewed over the lands’ due to mankind’s continued pillaging of the earth’s natural resources. Yet our political ‘pseudo prophets’ prefer to distract us with an austerity delusion rather than confront a reality perpetuated by certain corporations for whom ‘seek[ing] their own honour’ is of primary value. The music itself is very influenced by Tallis and canons and imitation abound. During my time as a ‘cellist at the Yehudi Menuhin School I performed Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis many times and so From the Beginning of the World which also uses Tallis’s Third Mode Melody from the English Hymnal is really a homage to both composers.' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad.

O Saviour of the World. Composed for unaccompanied SSATB with an English text from the Book of Common Prayer. This five-minute anthem was written for the UK?s Thomas Tallis Society, having in mind Tallis?s famous work for 5 voices with latin text, Salvator Mundi. The music matches the sense of anguish in the text.

Full Score-Nico Muhly's So To Speak for Wind Ensemble. Composed in 2005. First performed by the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble conducted by Eric Hewitt. Programme Note: So To Speak is an extended meditation on an anthem for Pentecost by Thomas Tallis entitled Loquebantur Variis Linguis (they spoke in manytongues). After organizing the material for the piece I wrote a melody that works against underneath and above Tallis’s lines to create counterpoint made of old and new elements. Patterns of aggressive woodwind scales and ornaments evoke some of the hysteria inherent in glossolalia (ecstatic speaking in tongues). The central section of the piece gestures towards an insect-like musical and religious fervor. Duration: 8 minutes

Jon Washburn Choral Series-This work from the Swiss composer Ivo Antognini was inspired by the astonishing Thomas Tallis setting of the same text. Incorporating Tallis' original melody in the final refrain O Nata Lux isfull of shimmering chords and unexpected harmonic inventions.

80 Arrangements For Weddings And Celebrations. What would love be without music - or music without love! Many couples associate unforgettable beautiful hours, a first meeting, or first kiss with a particular song. And composers have always been inspired and stimulated by love, have celebrated romantic love and longing from afar, secret love, and jealousy. In her selection of 80 songs from seven centuries, Mirjam James evokes this tremendous feeling with the most beautiful songs ranging from medieval courtly songs, through Beethoven's Ich liebe dich, to the Beatles song And I love her. Many of the songs come from German and English language traditions, but what would such a book be without the fire of southern Europe or a dose of French charm, without the moving melodies of cool northern climes, or the melancholy songs of the Russian soul? A vocal score has been published which contains all of the the songs in the new Carus book of lovesongs in easily playable accompaniments. For many of these songs choral settings by famous composers such as John Dowland, Thomas Morley, Thomas Tallis or Thoinot Arbeau have been adopted, wherever possible, in their original form. In addition, well-known and familiar original settings by Beethoven, Brahms, Benjamin Britten, and other composers will be found in this collection. Songs with entirely new accompaniments have also been included, resulting in a collection of lovesongs offering a distinctive stylistic variety suitable for many different occasions./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano
