In his comic opera Banditenstreiche, Suppé uses all the qualities that have made him so well-loved by a wide audience. The appealing music is brimming with unexpected ideas and written in a light and fluent style. There’s much to enjoy with elegant arias and ensembles, pure Viennese waltzes and attractive ballet music. The arrangement of the overture contains many highlights from this opera and makes a superb light item for any concert.

Henze composed these dances, which can be scored for various instruments, for the orchestra of the conservatory of Deutschlandsberg (Austria). These compositions are based on an anonymous Morissa (Spanish designation for a dance form probably introduced by crusaders) from the English Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.

In this small three-movement symphony written by Mozart at the age of ten, the rondo form is used for the first time in the finale. Like the Lambacher Sinfonie in G major, this work can also be played without wind instruments as -pure string symphony. In the second movement, two solo violins have to play the oboe parts here and there.

For comparison, Hindemith begins the 'Suite franzosischer Tanze' with the original movements by Pierre d'Attaignant. This is meant to be a demonstration and motivation for the player of today to add on his own little improvisa-tions or ornaments according to his playing skill as it is done with village dance music but even with jazz. The instruments can be freely chosen; this arrangement (piccolo and flute, oboe, English horn, bassoon, trumpet and lute) tries to imitate a group consisting of recorders, shawm, crumhorn, dulcian etc.

Gerhard Maasz studied composition with Paul Graener and sympathized with the youth music movement around Fritz Jode. In the kleine Instrumentenschau created in 1977 he uses the popular folk song Wir sind die Musikanten (which can be joined in by a one-part chorus) introducing systematically the individual orchestral ins-tru-ments. A work for children's and school concerts allowing the players and listeners an insight into the structure of an orchestra in a cheerful way.

Inspired by the operetta successes of Jacques Offenbach in Vienna, Franz von Suppé (1819-1895) began composing his first stage works from 1860 onward. “Isabella,” his comedic opera in one act from 1869, had its premiere in Vienna. The overture features both Spanish and Viennese melodies. Although Suppé's music doesn't always exhibit a typical Viennese sound, he secured a place in concert halls with his overtures such as “Poet and Peasant” or “Light Cavalry.”.

Although he was born in Split, Croatia, of Belgian descent, Franz von Suppé’s nationality is defined less by his actual descendents than by the country and city where he lived and worked and had the great majority of his success, the Austrian capital, Vienna. It was here where, with assistance from the Johan Strausses and Franz Lehar, he helped to assure Vienna’s reputation as the operetta capital of the world. He achieved this by pioneering operetta as a major medium for the theatre. The overture to Light Cavalry is one of his two most famous works, the other being the Poet and Peasant Overture written as incidental music for a play of the same name.
