Composed between 1920 and 1921, Stories is a suite of ten short movements by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962), a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. Written for piano, this publication was commissioned by Alphonse Leduc editor and increased Jacques Ibert's popularity. The ten pieces are as follows: 1. La meneuse de tortures d?or (The golden Turtle's leader) 2. Le petit âne blanc (The little white donkey) 3. Le vieux mendicant (The old beggar) 4. A Giddy girl?5. Dans la maison triste (In the sad house) 6. Le palais abandonné (The abandoned palace) 7. Bajo la mesa (Under the table) 8. La cage de cristal (The crystal cage) 9. La marchande d?eau fraiche (The fresh water merchant) 10. Le cortège de Balkis (Balkis march). It is believed that the pieces 1, 2, 4, 8 and 10 were initially composed for 4-hand piano. Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) also composed many symphonic suites, operas and seven orchestras, including Angelique (1926) and Divertissement (1930). He also was in charge of the French Academy in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.

It was through Einar Englund (1916-1999) that the Neoclassicism already familiar elsewhere in the world landed on Finnish shores in the late 1940s. A composer especially of large-scale orchestral and chamber works, Englund is one of the greatest Finnish symphonists.Sinuhe is an example of a Finnish composition founded on a non-Finnish subject handled in a non-National-Romantic way. This probably partly explains why the score has fallen into oblivion in Finland: the Oriental moods and the Nile do not correspond to the view of a Finnish composition as one favouring topics from the national epic, the Kalevala, and lakeland scenery. The music also incorporates motifs derived from Lapp yoiks used by Englund in his score for the film The White Deer (1952). When it was written, the ballet's combination of a historical subject with an exotic, stylised idiom showed that Englund had his finger on the international pulse, unlike, say, Samuel Barber's ballet Medea (1946) and Aram Khachaturian's ballet Spartacus (1956).The suite from Sinuhe is in five scenes. It omits the original overture and almost all the music for the second half of the ballet. Sinuhe's hapless love for the courtesan Nefernefer is described with languorous sensuality. His servant Kaptah throws himself into a frenzied dance with the Cretan maidens. The suite ends with the rhythmic war dance of his friend Horemheb.

Offenbach, who came to Paris at the age of 14, gave concerts as a cello virtuoso and composed for salons and dance halls before achieving world fame as the inventor of the “Offenbachiade”. However, writing waltzes, mazurkas and polkas not only provided him with a good technical basis, it was also a perfect vehicle for making a name for himself in the Parisian music world. La Jeunesse de Berlin is one of the first waltz suites that Offenbach composed for one of the legendary Parisian entertainment establishments, the “Turkish Garden”. It was only published in a very small edition. Neither biographers nor catalogs mention the charming work. Until the French researcher and collector Jérôme Collomb found a copy of the first edition for piano and thus made this new publication possible.

Jon Lord’s Sarabande was composed during 1975 and released as a solo album the following year. This new revised edition of the composer’s 2010 concert version represents the first appearance of the work in print in anyform. Lord intended it for his own use in live performance, as a companion to his celebrated Concerto for Group and Orchestra. From Stage Flop to Concert FavoriteThe story of Alphonse Daudet's drama L'Arlesienne to which Georges Bizet composed several pieces in 1872 focuses on the story of love and suicide and was inspired by true events. The musical drama had flopped at its premiere, but the suite that Bizet arranged shortly afterwards from its stage music enjoys great popularity to this very day. After Bizet's death, his friend Ernest Guiraud put together four more movements of themes and motives by Bizet for a second suite establishing a musical connection to Provence und Arles especially in the outer movements, the Pastorale and the effective Fandarole.
