Le Boléro est peut-être unique en son genre dans le sens où l?orchestration géniale de Ravel est encore plus importante que les éléments mélodiques rythmiques et harmoniques de l?oeuvre ; c?est pourquoi Philip Sparke n?a pas vu l?utilité d?en produire une version simplifiée ou ?réduite? mais a essayé de respecter au mieux la partition de Ravel. According to Ravel himself the strange title of the little Piano piece composed in 1899 ?Pavane for a dead princess? should not be ascribed too much importance. He chose it mainly because he liked the alliterationit contained. At the same time he did however agree that the music evokes ?a pavane that a little princess once might have danced at the Spanish court?.Following its premiere in 1902 the simple but effective piece gainedunparalleled popularity not least reflected in the numerous arrangements made of it one of which for small orchestra was by Ravel himself. Par RAVEL MAURICE. Thomas Ospital Pourquoi Ravel n'a t'il rien composé pour l'orgue ? C'est l'éternelle question que se posent les organistes ... Seulement, aimait-il cet instrument? Sa musique, si gracieuse et infiniment mouvante pouvait-elle épouser l'apparente rigidité de l'orgue ? D'autre part, on peut se demander quel aurait été son attrait pour cet instrument si la musique d'orgue de son temps eut été plus connectée à la vie musicale du début du xx:e siècle. Et que dire s'il avait connu nos instruments modernes ... Et nous pourrions ainsi continuer à spéculer et nous livrer à des débats sans lendemain. Bien sûr la transcription permet de combler une partie de ce manque. Mais finalement, avons-nous le droit de détourner une ?uvre imaginée et rêvée dans une finalité sonore simplement pour assouvir notre frustration ? J'ai pour ma part beaucoup hésité à me lancer dans cette aventure. Mais en y travaillant, je me suis rendu compte que cela ouvrait de nouvelles pistes dans l'écriture pour orgue afin de transcrire non pas le texte musical mais cette flexibilité du son si présente dans l' ?uvre de Ravel. Je me suis appuyé pour cela sur les deux versions de Ma Mère l'Oye; celle pour piano à 4 mains composée en 1910 et l'orchestration datant de 1911. Le piano, dont l'épanouissement sonore est si particulier et insaisissable, reste un instrument toujours difficile à transcrire. Aussi, l'orchestration de cette ?uvre par l'auteur donnait de nombreuses réponses quant à la manière de traiter les questions de résonances ou de masses sonores. Lorgue de Saint-Eustache fut également un véritable complice dans cette réalisation; une sorte de laboratoire pour chercher à transposer les effets sonores générés par l'orchestration. Les registrations ont été inspirées par les couleurs de cet orgue bien que rationalisées pour un orgue à trois claviers. Aussi, il est important de ne pas être trop scrupuleux dans l'application de ces indications. De façon générale, il faut veiller à ce que chaque plan sonore reste équilibré et clair. Ne pas hésiter à enlever certains jeux de fonds pour favoriser la lisibilité du discours. Enfin, colorer les jeux solistes par l'adjonction mesurée d'harmoniques. Initially composed in 1907 for Bass Voice and Piano Habanera by Maurice Ravel was transcribed for Bb Soprano Saxophone and Piano for this edition. Based on a Cuban Contradanza it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition the Saxophone is a substitute for the Voice. While composing this piece Maurice Ravel was also working on two works with Spanish influence: 'The Spanish Rhapsody' and 'The Spanish Hour'. One of Ravel?s earliest works Jeux d?Eau was written for solo Piano in 1901. It is dedicated to Gabriel Fauré under whom Ravel was studying at the time. The title can be variously translated asFountains or Water Games. It was inspired by a piece by Lizst of the same name. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is often considered after the death of Debussy in 1918 to be the leading Frenchcomposer of the 1920s and 30s. Earlier in his career he had caused consternation in the highly conservative pre-war French musical establishment with his unmistakable and highly original style.

for Harp Flute Clarinet and String Quartet-In June 1905 Ravel told a friend shortly before setting off on a long holiday: ?I was terribly busy because of a piece for harp commissioned by the Érard company. I was able to finish it after a fashion thanks to 8 days ofdogged work and three sleepless nights?. But the piece itself shows nothing of the haste in which it was written. In fact it seems as if Ravel knew how to explore all the musical possibilities of the harp in this brief buthighly striking piece. This septet with its unusual combination of instruments is a further enrichment of Henle?s Urtext editions of Ravel?s chamber music.

Maurice Ravel wrote his Menuet Sur Le Nom D'Haydn in September 1909 to commemorate the Viennese classicist who died 100 years before on 31 May 1809. The piece was published for the first time in connection with an 'Hommage à Joseph Haydn' in the Revue musicale to which several contemporaries of Ravel contributed as well. The original edition still in use today was published shortly after. A comparison with the composer's autograph currently in France and privately owned clearly shows the errors and shortcomings of the two first editions so that Ravel's musical intentions can now be published in full measure for the first timein the present new critical edition.
