Pastoral music makers have talents that translate across denominations, and every now and then a musician might find him- or herself playing in unfamiliar territory (different order of service, different rituals, different traditions, different musical styles, etc.). The question of how to adapt to another pattern of worship may arise, creating a great deal of confusion or stress for the musician. A Primer for the Visiting Organist, edited by Fred Moleck, provides a comprehensive answer for anyone in this situation. This book includes insightful chapters by some of the foremost experts on music in worship that describe, in detail, what the visiting organist can expect when playing for one of the following eight religious traditions: African American Protestant: Dr. James Abbington Baptist: Dr. David Music Episcopalian: Dr. Carol Doran Reform Jewish: Mr. Scott Kumer Lutheran: Dr. Paul Westermeyer Presbyterian: Mr. David Eicher Roman Catholic: Mr. Robert Batastini & Dr. Fred Moleck United Methodist: Dr. Don Saliers A Primer for the Visiting Organist covers everything from the order of service to the question of receiving communion. There is a wealth of information here—no organist should travel without it.

As the title suggests, ON THE MOVE is a perky Allegro full of charming optimism. Louke wrote this trio for three matching flutes of any size, equally suitable for three C flutes or any combination of matching low flutes. The 5½-minute work is in Fast-Moderato-Fast form, and suitable for students through professionals. Phyllis Louke composed ON THE MOVE to premiere herself, along with Sharon Byer and Paige Long on three contrabass flutes, at the 2020 International Low Flutes Festival in Tokyo.ON THE MOVE is a trio for three flutes of any matching size; it also works well with a larger ensemble, using multiple players on each part. It was composed for my dear friends Sharyn Byer, Paige Long, and me to premiere (on 3 contrabasses!) at the 2nd International Low Flutes Festival in Tokyo, originally scheduled for March 2020.Since the three of us and our husbands love to travel together, we usually find ourselves on the move traveling and making music together at least once a year.ON THE MOVE is written in ABA form with a short coda. The opening (and closing) sections are energetic and rhythmic with some syncopation, while the center section is a little slower and more expressive with lyrical melodies and flowing lines.

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting Pacific Dreams Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of Pacific Dreams, he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his Pacific Dreams.Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

TACHUN (SPRING OUTING) was composed in 2021 for “The Joy Project,†to commission uplifting works for performance at free outdoor concerts in the San Francisco Bay region. The work’s title comes from the annual Chinese festival when people go outdoors and travel, to welcome the arrival of the new Spring season. This cheerful 5-minute work features energetic melodic lines in unison, contrasting with vivid rhythmic patterns, which the composer indicates as expressing our excitement upon breathing the fresh Spring air.Tachun (Spring Outing) was commissioned by and dedicated to the Del Sol String Quartet as a part of The Joy Project in 2021. Tachun is also the name of a Chinese traditional festival when people go outdoors and travel, to welcome the arrival of the new spring season each year. Here is a statement from the Del Sol String Quartet about this project:“Del Sol has commissioned a body of short musical works written to give joy. As our gift to our community during these times, we are performing these pieces in numerous free concerts at public settings around the Bay Area — parks, schoolyards, open spaces — where people can soak up some musical “joy†while safely practicing social distancing in the open air.â€My string quartet has active melodic lines in unison, contrasting with vivid rhythmic patterns, to express our excitement when we breathe the fresh air.

Whitman’s epic “Song of the Open Road†is an inspiring metaphor encouraging us to find and explore our own paths, free of anchors or artificial boundaries. Dorff uses 5 brief passages from the poem as movement titles, setting the stage for a suite of sometimes-edgy soliloquies in which the music (and the flutist) explores these open roads.

Sea Squall is about the journey of a ship traveling across turbulent seas. It starts with the primary melody that comes back frequently, with every section having a turn playing it. The context of this theme changes as the piece progresses. Sometimes it is calm and safe, and sometimes more powerful, like a storm with that lingering feeling of unpredictability. The bowings and dynamics, as well as what each section is playing, changes the mood and feeling of the music, from calm, to animated, even heroic in the louder areas. There is a new theme introduced later in the cellos with the upper parts following soon after. The focus of the player should be to bring out these contrasts in the parts, by observing the dynamics and articulations.Sea Squall is about the journey of a ship traveling across turbulent seas. Composition winner of the 2nd Edition (2008) of the Classical Guitar Musical Composition Competition â??Suoni Nuovi Autoriâ?? in Latina, Italy (Section 1)The composition Roma born after a short travel in the eternal city. The multiple cultural, historical and landscaped stimuli that derive from its ruins must touch the mind of every visitor dipping it and transporting it behind in the history: these are the feelings that have inspired the composition of a conceptualistic-descriptive music work, dedicated to the places that more meant during the authorâ??s travel. First part, â??Anfiteatro Flavioâ??, is clearly dedicated to Colosseo. It is so imposing and majestic that recalls still today the outcry of the battles and the noise of the iron: all that is translate in music with frequent changes of time and a virtuosistic and pressing writing. The apex of the fight marks in the composition a growing culminated in a moment of suspension and the immediate resumption with change of theme for the victory moment and its majestic celebration. The second part, â??Villa Borgheseâ??, marks the passage to a situation of ecstasy and serenity inspired from the beauty and tranquillity of the places of the famous roman park. The composition develops with sweetness but are also present dissonant notes that recall the park contextualizzation in the heart of the city, with its chaotic present and with the urgent violence of its past.
