Some of the themes in Mussorgskys 'Bilder einer Ausstellung' were adapted in this edition because of their difficult figurativeness. The tempi-specifications are the same but the information about the metronome have been reduced.

The Russian composer Mussorgsky was for the most part self-taught. His contemporaries were not always enthusiastic about the innovations in his music and accused him of lacking technique. Today however Mussorgsky is considered the innovator of Russian music par excellence. Although he gained fame primarily as a composer of operas and songs Mussorgsky also wrote a number of piano works; for example the suite Pictures at an Exhibition from 1874.

Though the first published version of this piece appeared in 1886 it was not until Maurice Ravel created an Orchestral version of Pictures From An Exhibition in 1922 that the world awoke to the magnificence of the work. Originally created to honour a deceased artist friend of Mussorgsky’s by creating musical impressions of his art works at an exhibition the work also represents the composer’s version of Russian national music a cause to which Mussorgsky was dedicated.The music includes translations of the composer’s own comments on each movement in descriptions of the pictures. The Promenade is now frequently used as a processional at weddings.

Few operas have had such a remarkable history as Mussorgsky’s masterpiece Boris Godunov. It exists in no less than three complete versions by the composer himself as well as posthumous editions and orchestrations by Rimsky-Korsakov (from which this arrangement is taken) Shostakovich and others.The Coronation Scene is set in the Square of the Moscow Kremlin between the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Cathedral of Archangel Michael the year is 1598. Night on Bald Mountain is one of the best-known works of 19th century Russian programme music in the world. With virtuosic orchestration Mussorgsky depicts a demonic witches? sabbath on St John?s Night on the Triglav mountain. Zsigmond Szathmáry (b. 1939) the internationally-known concert organist has reworked the music of this symphonic poem to create a new work which puts the sound possibilities of the concert organ fully to the test. In the process a virtuosic work has been created a technical and musical challenge for organists and a guaranteed treat for audiences. ?Tonally expressive dimensions coupled with unheard-of virtuosity? rejoiced onemusic critic after the performance.
