Written in 2001, this work was conceived by the need to enlarge the repertoire of works for solo cello, an important goal since the repertoire of such works is limited. Most cellists are limited to performances of such well-known solo works as the Suites of Bach, written almost 300 years ago, as well as other classics of the genre by Max Reger, Zoltan Kodaly, Benjamin Britten, Gaspar Cassado, Enric Casals, etc.The intention of the Suite Exotique is to revolutionize the concept of the Baroque suite by transforming the suite into a collection of modern dances, which are both contemporary and widely recognized today. Thus, the dances of the Baroque suite, such as Allemande, Courante, Sarabande are substituted for the Tango, Milonga, Blues in such a way that the traditional formal structure of six movements of Baroque dances is modernized by rhythms and contemporary styles which coexist in the Modern world, but are separate from and do not pertain to those works which are normally considered to belong to the realm of cultured music.Apart from the fusion represented by the mixture of a Baroque genre with modern, urban musical language found in this work, the subtitle exotica is appropriate due to the originality of writing such a work for cello solo. This work allows the interpreter to explore and take full advantage of their technical, artistic and expressive abilities. This work establishes a total symbiosis between the instrument and the evolutionary transformation of its musical language which in turn creates a style adapted to the expressive requirements of the work itself. The specific techniques and qualities of the cello are placed in service of the required style and concept of each movement of the Suite. At the same time those stylistic characteristics are transformed and adapted to the particular characteristics of the cello and taking full advantage of the instruments polyphonic, sonic, aesthetic qualities as well as its timbre. The Suite Exotique was premiered in August, 2003 during the International Music Festival of Ibiza by the Russian cellist Svetlana Tovstukha.

Score available: KP00247 Ruders writes: Quartet No. 3 Motet was written in 1979, commissioned by the Lerchenborg music-week of 1979 during which it was first performed by Quatuor Bernede. This short one-movement quartet is a kind of modernization of the 14th century French motets, a cadeau to this weird and fantastic music whose abstract and almost deprecatory, introvert expression appears unaccountably modern and incredibly ancient at the same time. Motet is a sober, cool treatise on rhythm and statics, depicted in a Gothic, crypt-like atmosphere. The almost completely non-vibrato movement is suggestive of boys' choir, monks' processions, and the piercing sound of musical glasses. An ancient world is reborn and becomes the world of today.

The ensemble work “Scattered Shades,” composed in 2014, of the Chinese composer Guoping Jia for the instrumentation flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano was premiered on 21 May 2014 in Beijing at the 'Beijing Modern Music Festival,' performed by the ensemble 'Les Temps Modernes.' Although this work received its essential inspiration from ancient Chinese pen-and-ink painting, it also simultaneously documents the overcoming of a creative crisis. During an artistically difficult period, Jia assigned himself the task in 1997 to compose a study that was to supersede the compositional techniques used so far with the means of rational construction. “Scattered Shades” has recourse to this study, retracing its structure in a more profound way with a different ensemble.

Andrea Gabrieli was a major force in moving the classical music world toward the more modern Venetian school of the Renaissance. Called by Alfred Einstein One of the greatest and most influential masters of the Renaissance period, Gabrieli fully developed the use of choirs of voices and instruments, often in opposition to each other. David has selected three examples from a posthumous 1589 collection, advising that the four-part pieces were originally scored for viols but are here arranged for modern instruments. And while the arrangement will accommodate a number of players per part, single players would be more historically correct. As important as Andrea was to the Venetian School, his fame would be eclipsed by his nephew and student, Giovanni Gabrieli.

Haydn's C major Concerto now in a new, up-to-date edition
EB 8634 (edition for violin and piano) with cadenzas by Thomas Zehetmair
ISBN 9790004211755. 10 x 12.5 inches.
Haydn's Violin Concerto in C major has always been closely linked to Breitkopf & Hartel, which began selling copies of the work back in 1769. The first edition came out in 1909 and helped secure the work a broad dissemination and lasting popularity. Strangely enough, this first edition is one of the most important sources today, since its own source a copy of Haydn's autograph, perhaps the autograph itself was lost at the end of World War II. Although other copies from Haydn's time were made, they are textually less reliable. Walter Heinz Bernstein has created an easily playable and pleasant-sounding piano score on the basis of the first edition, whereby he has respected the early classical continuo practice. As he did earlier in the G major Concerto (EB 8606), Thomas Zehetmair has once again accepted the challenging task of embellishing the solo part with stylistically accurate cadenzas and flourishes. This delightful concerto is thus now available in a modern edition. The piano-harpsichord part by Walter Heinz Bernstein features a continuo part in keeping with the late Baroque performing tradition and offers a much cleaner, unfettered realization.(Stringendo)Haydn's C major Concerto now in a new, up-to-date edition.

Ignace Strasfogel (1909 - 1994), a master student of Franz Schreker and Leonid Kreutzer, the youngest student at the Berlin Hochschule and the youngest recipient of the prestigious Mendelssohn Prize of the Weimar Republic, made a career as a conductor at the Metropolitan Opera after his emigration in 1934. His String Quartet No. 1, probably written in 1927 as the final work of his studies with Schreker, is an early work of the highest perfection. In the first of the two movements, grotesque-capricious scenariosare revitalized by contrapuntal artistry. The second, non less polypohnic, is a widely branched scherzo with an elegiac trio section. Just as striking is the harmony: With individually shaping of all four parts, all facets up to polytonality and complete detachment from functional tonality are explored - in a certain affinity with the musical language of Alban Berg, not without tongue-in-cheek references to the neoclassicism of the 1920s. A just as original as important contribution to the quartet repertoireof the early twentieth century.

Rock and jazz sounds mingle with classical tradition and modern techniques in Hause's virtuoso cello suite. In Fish Heaven, an arpeggiated texture reminiscent of Bach's cello suites expands along a quasi-Gospel chord progression. In Crabs on Parade, the contrapuntal technique of crab canon is rendered in a pizzicato texture drawing upon guitar technique. In five movements: 1. Man O' War, 2. Atlantis, 3. Sea Serpents, 4. Fish Heaven, 5. Crabs On Parade.

According to Jouni Kaipainen, the fourth string quartet (2006) is one of key works of Seppo Pohjola (b. 1965) and holds a place as a landmark in Finnish quartet literature. Of the composer's five string quartets, it is the longest and has the widest thematic arcs of his quartets. Seppo Pohjola has gone through a variety of styles in his musical career. He began as a strict Modernist, progressed towards Expressionism and took on board Romantic influences before ending up in the early 2000s in (a reformed brand of) Modernism again. Osmo Tapio Raihala describes the end result thus: The 'new' Pohjola often anchors his style in a frenetic pulse through which he builds musical processes. Duration c. 33 minutes. Score (A4) and parts (B4).

This three movement piano trio from Giselher Klebe’s late period of creativity originates from his estate. The composition’s appeal lies in the clear, restrained diction whilst at the same time a high intensity of expression is achieved. Two diverse slow outer movements with eruptive injections frame a lively middle movement. This work which has a duration of 20 minutes undoubtedly represents an impressive document of a musical style which we perceive today as the classical modern.
