Miguel Llobet's famous Catalan plucked string orchestra called the 'Lira Orfeo' was active in Barcelona from 1899-1906. Here we present a new engraving of all the surviving original scores, set in the same performing score format in which they were originally used 120 years ago. The Lira Orfeo quickly became an important part of Barcelona's cultural scene; with Tárrega as its honorary president the Lira Orfeo society was founded in 1898 and an official inaugural concert, shared between Manuel Burgés (pno) and Miguel Llobet (gtr) took place in Barcelona in 1898. The aim of the society was to offer a full musical education, both theoretical and instrumental, for guitarists and players of other plucked instrument family, with eventually with a place in its Catalan plucked instrument orchestra of the same name. The teachers for guitar were Miguel Llobet, Pedro Lloret and Domingo Prat. Prominent musicians such as Manuel Burgés and Baldomera Cateura were also on the teaching staff. Classes were given three times a week, and as the players were mainly amateurs with day jobs, these took place in the evening and often went on until 2 o'clock in the morning. The debut of the orchestra took place in 1903 and it gave regular concerts at top venues right up to the society's dissolution in 1907, mainly due to lack of funding. For the instruments used see the list of works below. The repertoire is varied, selected, arranged by Miguel Llobet it was mainly drawn from traditional and impressionist Iberian music, as well as the German classics, it includes a specially commissioned work Triomphe d'Orphée' by the famous Catalán pianist Manuel Burgés. We at Guitar Heritage are proud to present the first publication of this huge cultural contribution to music in its original form and prepared from the source manuscripts which were the work of Miguel Llobet. The edition has many illustrations, rare documents and photographs as well as a comprehensive critical commentary by Stefano Grondona - whose knowledge of Miguel Llobet, as well as of Catalonian culture, has made an edition of this scope possible. These arrangements are superb and presented as they originally were in the same score form. The now relatively rare instruments called for can be replaced by suitable alternatives - this is ideal and interesting material for adapting to guitar orchestra/ensemble or mandolin orchestra, or similar.

A unique view of Llobet, as a champion and arranger of Sor. The Sor studies reproduced in facsimile are from Llobet's own library. In an interview in Barcelona in 1929, which is reproduced in full in this edition, Llobet announced his intention of preparing a new edition of the Sor studies. Judging by the density of his marking and copious added and altered fingering in this facsimile edition, he seemed in fact to be doing just this. Unfortunately, a new edition edited by him never came to fruition! We have prepared our facsimile edition of these later printings of Simrock editions (a gift from Erwin Schwarz-Reiflingen in 1928), carefully restoring the originals to make these pages clearer, so that not only is everything more legible, but most importantly, all of Llobet´s fingerings and amendments are clearly legible. In this volume dedicated to Sor, we have re-engraved for inclusion here all 6 of Llobet's very fine Sor transcriptions from La Guitarra in Argentina, fingered and arranged by Llobet.

This edition of the Catalan folk songs is more complete and contains more works than in any other edition. It is particularly generously documented. There is also an illustrated 12 page chronology of Llobet's life with 61 rare photographs and documents. As in all our editions both a detailed documented critical commentary and copious notes are included. Catalan song also connects Llobet to the cultural restlessness of the epoch in which he was born and grew up, to the movement relating to the birth and definition of a Catalan cultural identity, which, when properly understood, was to reveal all the more fully Llobet's intellectual and above all his musical stature, before we came to consider him a great poet of the guitar as well.

In contrast to Llobet´s output of just 14 original works, his transcriptions for guitar number 118, a considerable quantity of an extremely high standard. These were a huge influence on the two generations of guitarists following Llobet some of whom mercilessly and anonymously plundered and disfigured them for their own use! Being also an accomplished pianist, Llobet was in a better position than any other of his contemporaries to transcribe the German Romantic Masters, as well as the piano music of Albéniz and Granados, among others. Transcribed by Llobet mainly during his formative years these transcriptions are masterpieces which transcend their original setting. In his early career, Segovia played many transcriptions of Llobet, eg Bach's Prélude in Dm, Sarabande, Bourrée, Gavotte. This volume is highly recommended.

The third volume of four volumes of Llobet's masterful transcriptions for solo guitar. His transcription of the Tchaikovsky Mazurka Op. 40 no. 5 is a brilliant achievement. Cécile Chaminade's charming Aire de Ballet no. 3 from 1925 for piano in Llobet's transcription is a first publication and a most welcome addition to the guitar repertoire by a famous composer. The Berceuse by Villar is a first publication of the version that Llobet used to perform, which is quite different to the UME edition. As a matter of interest, note that our 15-volume edition of Llobet's collected works includes no fewer than 60 first publications.

Composed 1896-1935, the just fourteen original works which Miguel Llobet dedicated to the guitar represent a compact corpus incorporating the innovative, expressive, technical and idiomatic trajectory of a renewed and revitalised instrument, concentrated into a revolutionary and exploratory journey through totally uncharted reaches of the modern guitar.

The piano played an important part in Llobet's life. He and his wife Anita Aguilar were accomplished pianists. This volume concentrates on the piano's Central European classical repertoire, which Llobet knew well. These arrangements are absolute gems, and this volume contains two unpublished works.

Thanks to Stefano Grondona, this unknown and unedited transcription by Tárrega in G major of Albéniz' Cádiz, known widely as the Célebre Serenata Española has just been identified in a manuscript copied by Miguel Llobet, probably while he was still Tárrega's pupil. This beautiful and subtle transcription is not overcomplicated to play, Tárrega did not try to do everything, as some later transcribers have attempted to do. The melody sings and the accompaniment is subtly always there. The tuning with 5th string to G, and 6th to D, is no hindrance - on the contrary it is a boon. We are not aware of any published version of this work in G major, and this particular version has never been published until now. We are delighted to make it available for the first time in a new scholarly edition prepared from Llobet's meticulously accurate manuscript, a copy of which is reproduced in the edition.
