The first textcritical edition of Mahler's most extensive work is a further milestone in the project, Mahler - The Symphonies. The many sources first consulted here for an edition include, among others, the conducting scores used for early performances by Mahler, Mengelberg and other conductors, as well as the parts of the Vienna Philharmonic used by Mahler, Bruno Walter and many additional great conductors right up to the present. Furthermore, another set of parts from Mahler's personal possession was consulted. These sources, significantly expanding the source base in comparison with that of the 1974 Kritische Gesamtausgabe, guarantee a reliable, scholarly valid music text, shedding at the same time new light on Mahler's complex process of revision. In unprecedented comprehensiveness, the editorial report contains references from Mahler's letters and other authentic documents indispensable for an understanding of the work and its interpretation. The orchestral parts feature as usual optimal readability and practicality. Rounding off the edition is the introductory essay Mahler as Symphonist, together with the knowledgeable preface by Constantin Floros, doyen of Mahler research.

Of all his symphonies, Mahler gave the Fourth, his favorite and problem child, his most particular attention. The Heavenly Life, a humoresque composed in 1892 for soprano and piano, which he already wanted to use in the final movement of the Third Symphony under the title What the Child Tells Me, ultimately became the nucleus and final movement of the Fourth. Even after publication in 1901, Mahler kept repeatedly refining the orchestration. His maxim not without my retouching led to a whole series of revised reprints. It is probably no coincidence that Mahler performed especially the Fourth Symphony in his last two New York concerts in February 1911, using this opportunity to review once again the score and parts. This performance material with his retouching served as the main source for the new edition. Furthermore, included for the first time were corrections and annotations in conjunction with performances of the Fourth, which Mahler entered into the scores of conductors such as Mengelberg and Wickenhauser. PB 5664 has been awarded the Presto Sheet Music Award 2020.

Nicholas Kok's newly-created vocal score of the 4th and 5th movements of Mahler's 2nd Symphony is aimed particularly at vocal soloists and choral singers who wish to practice the two vocal movements in this work; it is available on sale, as is the chorus score. To ensure a secure entry at the attacca beginning of the 4th movement, the vocal score begins earlier in the 3rd movement. The rehearsal letters in the prevalently used orchestral materials have been taken into consideration so that the vocal score and chorus score are compatible with all the available music editions. In his 2nd Symphony, premiered in 1895 after a seven-year gestation period, Gustav Mahler combined different work concepts which he had previously tried out in various independent compositions: the 1st movement with the original title Todtenfeier was conceived as a symphonic poem, the 3rd movement is based on the original song for voice and piano St Anthony of Padua's Sermon to the Fishes, the 4th movement is the orchestral song Urlicht for alto, with text, like the 3rd movement, from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, and the 5th is a setting and elaboration of the Klopstock Ode Die Auferstehung for soprano and alto solo with mixed chorus. Mahler created a work in the vocal-symphonic tradition founded by Beethoven and, despite its challenges in extent and scoring, it remains one of his most popular compositions.

This remarkable book contains twelve short musical excerpts of great instrumental works—“mini scores” designed to accompany any instrumental conducting texts and intended to be performed in any instrumental conducting class. Each excerpt presents specific challenges for developing conductors to explore as they acquire knowledge, gain experience, and develop conducting techniques. The orchestration of each excerpt is designed to be flexible while at the same time providing high-quality music for use in any instrumental conducting class. The full score and parts of each excerpt, all in one spiral-bound book, are designed to help any conducting student mark and memorize a score, learn to conduct using the limited instrumentation in a typical conducting class, and experience working with a wide range of repertoire. Even if players are not able to cover all the parts for an excerpt, there are still numerous possibilities for using this music in a classroom setting. States author John M. Laverty: “I hope this resource will give you the materials to enhance your level of conducting skill, and as a result give you confidence to step in front of live musicians playing real instruments and make music.” Excerpts from: Brahms: Symphony No. 1, op. 68: Mvt. IV, Adagio Fučík: The Florentiner March, op. 214 Janáček: Lachian Dances, op. 2: “Pilky” and “Starodálvný” Mahler: Symphony No. 3: Mvt. VI, Langsam Maurer: 12 Kleine Stück: “du Style” Mozart: Requiem, K. 626: Mvt. 1 (“Requiem”) Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition: “The Great Gate of Kiev” and “The Hut of Baba-Yaga” Schumann: Zigeunerleben (“Gypsy Life”), op. 29, No. 3 Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4: Mvt. 1, Andante sostenuto, Symphony No. 6: Mvt. 2, Allegro con grazia.

Never before published! Mahler composed the work at the beginning of 1888 in Leipzig. In 1889 it was subsequently premiered as a symphonic poem in Budapest. Now, Universal Edition is justifiably proud to publish this first score of Titan, the early five-movement version of his Symphony No. 1, in connection with the Complete New Critical Edition. Our first edition of Titan contains the history of its genesis, reviews of the performances in Hamburg and Weimar, a discussion of the programmes and the underlying ideas behind the work, colour prints of important sources, and an extensive critical commentary that describes the variants, problematic passages and all editorial interpolations. (-- Universal Edition) The International Gustav Mahler Society is the academic authority on my grandfather's works, and Universal Edition is his trusted publisher. (-- Marina Mahler).
