In the last years of his life Brahms seems to have become weary of composing but fortunately for posterity in 1891 hemet the solo clarinettist of the Meiningen court orchestra Richard Mühlfeld whose mellifluous art of performance captivated him and inspired him to new works. The Trio op. 114 is melancholy and autumnal in character and isloved by all clarinettists. It is now available from Henle in a revised edition. Brahms?s manuscript of his op. 114 lies in Munich the home city of G. Henle Publishers. The musical text follows that of the New Brahms CompleteEdition and thus guarantees the highest degree of precision and reflects the current state of research. The pianist Klaus Schilde has added valuable fingerings to this Urtext edition.

Double Concerto in a minor op.102-The cellist Robert Hausmann had actually requested a Cello concerto - but Brahms paired the Cello with a Violin in his 'Double Concerto'. The unusual work has already been available as part of the newBrahms Complete Edition for several years.Using Brahms? original Piano reduction Johannes Umbreit has produced a playable Piano setting that optimally renders the colourfulness of the score. The first three movements of Johannes Brahms? E Minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862 the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms? life however it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann?s advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.38 by Cornelius van Vliet andEdwin Hughes Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists? van Vliet Becker and Klengel?s fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. Par SENFTER JOHANNA. The number of well-known clarinet quintets is quite small. The only major composers whose clarinet quintets are relatively widespread are Mozart, Brahms, Weber and Reger. The composer Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) from Oppenheim admired the music of Johannes Brahms and of Max Reger who was her teacher. Her chamber music œuvre conveys a certain closeness to the clarinet. She even wrote a Sonata for clarinet, viola, horn and piano, op. 37, a Sonata for clarinet or viola and piano, op. 57, as well as a Trio for clarinet, horn and piano, op. 60. Continuing the historic line of Brahms and Reger, the clarinet quintet is steeped in the harmony, compositional style and expressiveness of her teacher Reger - a style which she developed even further and increased in expressiveness. String Quartets in c minor and a minor op. 51-Brahms had already composed over 20 String quartets (he confessed to a friend that he had burnt all of that ?stuff?) before he finally presented his Opus 51 to the public. In the end only threesurviving works managed to withstand his high self-criticism; numerous layers of corrections bear witness to his struggle with each detail. We are now publishing the two passionate dark Quartets Op. 51 separatelyfrom the rather more lively Opus 67. The basis for this edition is the volume in the New Complete Edition of Brahms? works published in 2004 by Henle for which previously missing sources in a Swiss bequest wereconsulted for the first time.
