The tune SEGUNDO is intended specifically for hymn texts in long meter (LM, or 88 88) that can benefit from a sense of gravitas. In performance, the entire hymn may be sung by unison choir, or if desired, the beginning stanzas may be sung by one or more soloists or sections allowing the piece to build over its four stanzas, so that the last stanza, with its soaring descant, pours forth rife with emotion.

This combination pairs a text by one of our greatest hymn writers, Isaac Watts (who was a contemporary of Bach and Handel) with a spirited tune from William Walker's Southern Harmony, an 1835 shaped-note tune book which included many hymns which have since become part of our hymnological canon, including “What Wondrous Love is This†(WONDROUS LOVE) and “Brethren, We Have Met to Worship†(HOLY MANNA). Energy and rhythmic precision will delight singers and listeners alike.

Written for organ, choir and assembly, this setting of ROCKINGHAM begins at a moderate pace in four parts. The a cappella writing for the third stanza slows down and moves to the relative minor, effectively portraying the gravity of the text. The piece returns to the original key and tempo for the final stanza by unison voices with descant. Hear a preview of this song and follow along with this score in this video:.

Invictus: A Passion addresses one of the world’s most powerful stories through the lens of the modern world. The texts, written or inspired by women, describe not only human suffering and persecution but also the human capacity for love and humility in the face of tyranny. Composer Howard Goodall is uniquely suited to bring these texts to life with music of emotional clarity and sweeping force. This excerpt is scored for soprano solo, tenor solo, SATB choir and piano. The text is by Christina Georgina Rossetti, Isaac Watts (“When I survey the wondrous cross,â€) and drawn from John 20:1 (this text in Latin). The music is serene, acknowledging the grief of those who are left to mourn. Duration 6:57.
