Ashoob (Calligraphy No. 14) was written for Dariush Saghafi and the Carpe Diem String Quartet. Reza Valis ?Calligraphies? series isa set of an ongoing cycle of works based on the Persian modal system the ?Dastgâh ? which he has been composing since2000. The basic compositional material of the work is derived from a fast tempo genre called the ?Reng ? which is usually performed at the end of a traditional Persian music concert. Versions for Persian Santoor with string quartet (original) andfor string quartet only are available from the publisher. The original version was premiered on March 18-20 2016 at the McConnell Arts Center in Columbus Ohio by Dariush Saghafi Santoor and the Carpe Diem String Quartet.

Der österreichisch-ungarische Komponist Erwin Schulhoff (1894?1942) war musikalisch frühreif: Auf Empfehlung Antonín Dvoráks erhielt er Klavierunterricht mit sieben Jahren, wurde mit zehn Jahren Schüler im Prager Konservatorium. Weitere Klavierstudien in Wien, Köln und Leipzig sowie Kompositionsunterricht bei Max Reger ergänzten seine Ausbildung. Seine jüdische Herkunft, durch die seine Musik als ?entartet? diffamiert wurde, und seine Sympathie für den Kommunismus kosteten ihm allerdings das Leben: In Prag und schließlich im bayerischen Wülzburg bei Weißenburg interniert, starb er an Tuberkulose. Schulhoffs musikalische Bedeutung liegt in der Integration des Jazz in die Kunstmusik, etwa in seinem Oratorium H.M.S. Royal Oak oder in seiner Hot Sonate für Alt-Saxophon und Klavier. Er selbst verdiente sich lange Zeit seinen Lebensunterhalt als Jazzpianist. Im August 1922 entstanden vier kurze Klavierstücke, seine Rag Music, denen er im November noch vier weitere Sätze hinzufügte: veröffentlicht als Partita, die auch als Jazz-like-Partita bekannt wurde ? mit den damaligen Modetänzen Ragtime, Foxtrott, Shimmy, Boston und ? als Nr. 7 ? ein Tango. Vom Klavier- in einen Streichquartett-Satz gewandelt, präsentiert sich das Arrangement als ein delikates und pfiffiges, spieltechnisch nicht allzu schwieriges Bonbon, geeignet als Abwechslung oder Zugabe in einem Quartett-Programm. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Lully Lullay was written at the request of Philip Reed music director of the Bury St Edmunds Bach Choir which gave the first performance on 17 December 2011 at Holy Trinity Church Long Melford Suffolk. Inspired by the familiar medieval text of the Coventry Carol it is sung a cappella and invokes the sense of a lullaby through its metre and lilting melody. The fragility and bittersweet tonality of the opening verse is reflected in the continuous interaction between the tonic and dominant keys and resolving dissonances. This develops into broader passages of increased range and dynamics during the second and third verses where the melody ispassed between the upper and lower voices clearly invoking the poignancy of the text. Isabelle ABOULKER, pianiste et compositrice française reconnue concentre à partir de 1981 son activité créatrice autour de la voix et de ,l'opéra. Attentive à la prosodie, exigeante dans le choix de ses livrets, elle se veut héritière de la tradition française : Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc. Le nom d'Isabelle Aboulker est également indissociable d'opéras pour enfants. De ' Moi, Ulysse ' (1982, commande de Jean-Claude Malgoire pour l'Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing) à ' Jérémy Fisher ' (2007, commande du Quatuor Debussy et de l'Opéra de Lyon) elle a composé de nombreuses oeuvres destinées au jeune public.
