Monsoon Toccata by Anthony Gilbert. 3'33; for solo piano. In memoriam Janet Owen Thomas (1961-2002). In 1988, Janet Owen Thomas met up with me in Sydney at the end of a short organ-recital tour - possibly her last before devoting herself entirely to composing. We returned to England together, doing a rapid circular tour of Northern India on the way. Alighting from the plane at Delhi we were hit by the whirling wind and torrential rain of the seasonal monsoon, and early the following morning there was also a minor earthquake. This experience determined the spirit of the music, and Northern Indian Raga determines the purely technical approach, with thequasi-improvisatory toccatalike textures acting as decoration to a slow-moving, widely-spaced modal top line which almost loses control of the overall shape at the mid-point - a reflection of the impact of those natural phenomena. Even more than Schoenberg’s or Webern’s, Berg’s music made an enormous impact on me during the late 1950s and early 1960s when studying with Alexander Goehr. Work on this little piece was commenced on the 25th anniversary of Berg’s death, and to commemorate the first performance of his Piano Sonata in April 1911 it was first performed in April 1961, by the pianist and composer Madeleine Coates Russell at a our own ‘society for private performances’ in London. Its shape is simple - a stage-by-stage progression from slow and gentle to a dense climax at double speed, then a return to the spirit, if not the material, of the opening. Its public première, the first of any of mycompositions, was given by Susan Bradshaw at a Macnaghten Concert in November 1961. It was awarded Morley College’s Fricker Composition Prize. - Anthony Gilbert Recorded on Prima Facie PFCD007 'Piano Music' by Richard Casey/Ian Buckle. Duration: 2'30.

Italian composer, Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day, and it is for this reason that this first volume of Selected Sonatas isindispensable to performers of the genre. Originally composed for the Harpsichord, Organ or early Pianoforte, the sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought thatmuch of Scarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music, considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. The first volume of Selected Sonatas, compiled by Kenneth Gilbert, includes many of the popular and recognised sonatas. Bearing in mind that Domenico Scarlatti was a highly competent and popular Keyboard player in his day, so much so that he was employed in theservice of two royal families, his sonatas are composed with much experience, understanding and expertise, creating an essential addition to the repertoire of all Keyboard players of the Baroque genre.

Jenkyns' songs for young singers can best be described as art songs for the youngest singers. Their ranges and technical requirements are just right for the younger age groups and their lyrics - as in The Snowman - are perfectly gauged for their performers.
Peter Jenkyns was a 20th century British composer, singer and educator who wrote a series of songs for primary-aged children, sensitively arranged and with appropriate lyrics. Jenkyns was the headmaster of two primary schools outside of London for whose choirs he composed songs for the St Albans' Schools Music Festival. He was also a highly-regarded Gilbert andSullivan patter-song singer and he founded a local Gilbert & Sullivan society which is still thriving.
