Offenbach (1819 - 1880), who was born in Germany, moved to Paris when he was a teenage boy and remained there for much of his life. He became especially famous as a composer of numerous operettas. and of one famous opera: Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). His operettas (or ‘musiquettes’) were often based on comical, or satirical librettos. He makes fun of Parisian daily life, dignitaries, the military, the pretentiousness of the Grand Opéra, and so on. In that respect, Offenbach’s operettas are not really comparable with those of his German-speaking contemporaries, for example, Franz Lehár and Johann Strauss the Younger. Musically speaking, we could callOffenbach’s operettas lively, funny, melodious and catchy. For La Belle Hélène, Offenbach drew from Greek mythology. The story is based on that of Helen of Troy, but is set in France, halfway through the 19th century; it has been turned into a satire on the élite of that time. The overture to La Belle Hélène was (and still is) very successful. Offenbach combined a number of arias and choruses from the operetta to give a taste of what is to follow. Many overtures which follow this form lack unity and structure. However, in this case the composition has been well thought-out.

Although he was born in Split, Croatia, of Belgian descent, Franz von Suppé’s nationality is defined less by his actual descendents than by the country and city where he lived and worked and had the great majority of his success, the Austrian capital, Vienna. It was here where, with assistance from the Johan Strausses and Franz Lehar, he helped to assure Vienna’s reputation as the operetta capital of the world. He achieved this by pioneering operetta as a major medium for the theatre. The overture to Light Cavalry is one of his two most famous works, the other being the Poet and Peasant Overture written as incidental music for a play of the same name.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) wrote his VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MINOR, Op. 8, between 1881 and 1882, and it remained his only foray in that genre. Composed while a teenager and still in school. While still very much a product of the Romantic era tradition, the work is not considered as distinctive as the works he would produce only a few years later, and Strauss himself later ridiculed the work. Still, with inventive and bold writing in the solo and hints of his mature harmonic style to come, there is much to enjoy in the work, including its warmth, youthful sincerity, and lyrical expression, so that it should not be dismissed as mere juvenilia, either by contemporary audiences or Strauss himself. The chamber version of the concerto was first performed in Vienna on December 5, 1882, with the dedicatee Benno Walter on the violin while Strauss played his own piano reduction. The premiere for the orchestral version would take place seven years later in Cologne on March 4, 1890, with Walter again performing the solo with an orchestra conducted by Franz Wüllner. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violin.

For flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B flat), 2 bassoons, double bassoon or bass tuba, 4 horns (E flat major/B flat) with additional parts for horns in F. When he was a mere 18 years old, Richard Strauss composed the highly Romantic, one-movement Serenade for Wind Instruments, op. 7. Extremely popular among wind players to this day, this work recalls in instrumentation and structure Mozart's “Gran Partitaâ€, which certainly served as a model for Strauss. The serenade was not premiered in its Bavarian homeland as might have been expected, butrather in Dresden, in 1882, under the direction of the then much-esteemed conductor Franz Wüllner, who had also given the inaugural performances of Richard Wagner's Rheingold and Die Walküre and later premiered Strauss' tone poems Till Eulenspiegel and Don Quixote. So it was a great honour for the young Bavarian! Editor Norbert Gertsch presents this little masterwork here for the first time in Urtext quality - in full score and instrumental parts - for which not just the first edition but also the autograph manuscript was scrutinised fastidiously.

Following the immense success of his fi rst waltzes Émile Waldteufel decided to continue composing works only in this genre. As a result of this he was nicknamed ‘The French Strauss’. He composed more than 250 dances, the best-known being the waltzes Les patineurs (Ice Skaters), Estudiantina and España. España was composed in 1886, based on the famous 1883 rhapsody of the same name by Emmanuel Chabrier. In his comic opera Banditenstreiche, Suppé uses all the qualities that have made him so well-loved by a wide audience. The appealing music is brimming with unexpected ideas and written in a light and fluent style. There’s much to enjoy with elegant arias and ensembles, pure Viennese waltzes and attractive ballet music. The arrangement of the overture contains many highlights from this opera and makes a superb light item for any concert. Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899) wrote the KAISER-WALZER, Op. 437 (EMPEROR WALTZES) to celebrate the toast of friendship that Franz Joseph I extended when he visited Wilhelm II in 1889. Fritz Simrock, his publisher, diplomatically suggested the name of the waltz so that it could be attributed to either emperor, depending on the circumstances of each performance. Italian composer Ottorino Respighi wrote several operas, ballet music, chamber music, piano and organ works as well as Cantatas in a stylemuch influenced by the French Impressionists mixed with his uniquepersonal style. The Japanese arranger Yoshihiro Kimura has skilfullyadapted Respighi?s symphonic poem Fontane di Roma for concertbands of an advanced level.
