As the title suggests, Music for Flute and Electronic Sounds explores the relationships between the flute - lyrical, then percussive; sometimes sustained, other times in sweeping lines - and electronic sounds - sometimes pitched, sometimes more clangorous and bell-like. The individual electronic sounds were designed and built using editors that are now readily available for synthesizers. This made it possible to produce accompanimental sounds that support and blend with the articulation and timbre of the flute in a way that until recently was awkward to accomplish. In addition to the electroacoustic blending, the flute and electronic sounds also share compositional structure, both rhythmic and melodic. There are two musical ideas that are germinal to the pitch and structure of the work. The first is a four-pitch interval set (in two pairs) of descending minor third, intervening ascending major second, and concluding ascending major third. This gesture is presented at the outset. The second idea is a palindromic interval set which appears for the first time in measure 25. Formally, the work is in three parts. Part One is used to introduce several musical characters, most of which are generated from the materials just mentioned. Part Two consists of a juxtaposition of two of these characters. One is jazzy and is generated entirely by the synthesizers while the flute joins the electric sounds in a serene chorale. The flute additionally has the responsibility of interrupting the fast motion of the jazzy character so that the chorale can be heard. Part Three recalls the first part but also includes a cadenza, which uses the serene character of Part Two as basic material. After the cadenza there is a short section that again recalls the beginning. The work closes with a cadenza-like flourish.

Born in 1938, French composer Jean-Claude Risset is best known for his pioneering contributions to electronic music. Composed in 2003, Reprises Alto Saxophone and Electroacoustic Device is no exception to the composer's prolific contributions to the genre. Risset has experimented with a variety of software to recreate and produce sounds and synthesis techniques. Composed for Conservatoire students, a typical performance of Reprises lasts around 3 and a half minutes. The Saxophone demonstrates use of chromaticism, extended techniques and complex rhythms, amongst other features, whilst accompanied by an electronic part, helpfully recorded on a CD. For all advanced saxophonists, aspiring to play a range of repertoire, Risset's Reprises is essential..

On the page, the violin part for Honest Music looks something like Terry Riley's In C, insofar as it's a collection of discrete, modular phrases to be recombined in “performance,” or in this case, by the electronic manipulation of the recording. But these aren't Riley's musical Lego blocks; most of these are long, expressive, idiomatic gestures, combining Nico's soaring English-choirboy diatonicism with Romantic, violinistic leaps and slides up and down the fingerboard. As these figures pile on top of each other, the close-miked, aberrant fiddle timbre comes to seem, as per the title of the piece, brutally candid. The other fragments, imitated in character by the sputtering harp and percussion of the accompaniment, sound more like scraps swept from a cutting-room floor somewhere - all false starts, warm-ups and afterbeats - and the glitchy, staticky noises in the background contribute to the sense of something rough, half-finished. The result is to suggest that all of Honest Music is an out-take, a rehearsal for another, wholly imaginary piece. But the gravity and authority of the harmonies (and the low drones) lend the makeshift nature of the piece an authentic drama in its own right: the sad beauty of things coming together and things falling apart.

The advent of electronics opened up new potentials for concepts concerning musical instruments, changing long-established perspectives and revolutionizing some centuries-old traditions. Over the last decades, those instruments gained in importance in science and turned into sought-after objects of museum collections. This volume takes up current research topics and deals with the following questions: What musical and creative capabilities were opened up and in which new ways were these made accessible to artists? How did composers and musicians react to newly emerging questions of instrumentality and virtuosity? Next to those aspects, this volume especially addresses perspectives and challenges of collection related tasks concerning this group of musical instruments. New and rather ephemeral materials of industrially shaped ways of production demand customised prerequisites for long-term preservation as well as presentation in exhibitions. Klang und Begriff is a publication series commissioned by the Staatliches Institut fur Musikforschung PK, Berlin. The topics of this series are oriented towards the tonal-auditory manifestation of composed music, which is explored analytically by today's available means of music theory, organology and music technology.

French saxophonist, Claude Georgel was born in 1959. He studied at the Nancy Conservatory where he became curious in the modern music heard today, written or improvised. His interests and expertise have led him to create many compositions, including Crise(n) for Alto Saxophone and Electronics. Crise(n) is the third volume in the composer's series, 'Altitudes'. The work is frequently incorporated to final year syllabuses at conservatoires. Composed in 2009, a typical performance of Crise(n) takes around three minutes and ten seconds. The piece is highly virtuosic, making use of complex rhyhtms, ornamentation, unusual performance directions, exploited sound techniques and other extended techniques. For all advanced saxophonists, Georgel's Crise(n) makes for a challenging, yet exciting performance work..

The idea with this piece was a representation of a subatomic or chemical process beginning and progressing, with electrons bouncing around and interacting. This mostly pizzicato piece is contrasted by legato violins used over the top of the spirited pizzicato material as contrast to the rest of the piece. A very effective, colorful and fresh piece. You may remember composer Mark Revell as the composer of music for the popular LG Signature commercial found in the YouTube link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-i0Ok43Ek8.The idea with this piece was a representation of a subatomic or chemical process beginning and progressing, with electrons bouncing around and interacting. The legato violins section about two-thirds of the way through should be a marked contrast to the pizzicato popping of the rest of the piece and played sweetly with sensuous vibrato.
