Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village ofMorschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and brass band (AMP 354-030). The six CONCERTI ARMONICI was long thought to be the work of the violinist-impresario Carlo Ricciotti or composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, but more recent research has revealed the composer to be Unico Wilhelm van Wassenauer (1692-1766). Born into a wealthy Dutch family, the diplomat and composer founded a Collegium musicum in The Hague under the oversight of Ricciotti. Composed between 1725 and 1740, the six concertos have been falsely attributed to a variety of contemporaries, Ricciotti and Pergolesi amongst them, since its anonymous publication. Wassenauer's aristocratic background was the reason for his secretiveness. The sentiment of the time ordained that musicians belong to the lower classes. This edition of CONCERTINO No. 2 (also CONCERTO ARMONICO in G Major, CONCERTO IV, or just CONCERTINO in G), drawing from the CONCERTO ARMONICO in G Major, IUW 3, was edited by 20th century Baroque expert Fritz Rikko. Rikko spuriously attributes the work to Pergolesi. Despite Wassenauer's authorship having since been confirmed, Rikko's original editorial notes have been retained. Instrumentation: Str (4 Vn parts [2.2.2.2].3.2.2): Harpsichord Continuo in score.

This work was especially composed for a concert series that was characterised by a variety of musical directions. These musical directions are captured in Campus Intrada, which was named after the Cultuurcampus in which the concerts took place. Thus, a typical fanfare-like section, a jazzy section and a section reminiscent of pop music are all concisely contained in this three-minute work.

In 2008, composer Philip Sparke published the latest volume of his instrumental books, Super Solos. Young German flautist Meinhard Drescher was so taken with these solos that his father secretly commissioned the composer toarrange three of the solos (Little Overture, Berceuse and Moto Perpetuo) into a mini-concerto for flute and concert band, which was presented to Meinhard as a 16th birthday present. Concertino Classico is in the standardquick-slow-quick concerto form and can be played by flute, clarinet or alto saxophone. A less well known masterpiece, sure to become a standard! This challenging but fun piece makes a great introduction to music of the Baroque era with its extensive use of octaves, staccato, and a wide variety of bowing techniques. On the other hand, this piece is extremely accessible to the audience and is sure to put them in a state of pure bliss by the end of the performance.

Resignation was composed in memory of one of Ed Kiefer's best friends. Evoking the struggle of coming to grips with the loss of a dear friend, the piece is based on the hymn, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. It is dramatic, heartfelt, and overwhelmingly beautiful. Neither could I write a piece that could come close to reflecting his kind spirit, wit, personality or talent. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to write anything at all. My own grief and the stages of my grief kept getting in the way. I ended up with a setting of the hymn-tune, Resignation. Resigned. To the fact that he is no longer with us. I know he is in a better place, but we are not. We miss him very much. And so, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need seems to speak to those of us he left behind. I apologize if this piece does not reflect your special feelings for him or help you celebrate his moving on. Unfortunately, I could only put down what I have come to accept and hope in some way it may speak to any of you that knew him or to others of you who have also lost a close friend. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. That is my hope and my hope for you.Although technically very easy, this composition requires a maturity of musicianship to be performed properly. The Bb contrabass clarinet part is integral to the composition, but there are cues in the tuba part if you need them.  Make sure you bring horns to the fore at m. 53 and the low brass at m. 59 so the melody can be heard without effort. Exaggerate dynamics to bring more emotion to the piece. Be careful not to diminuendo too soon near the end or it will be difficult to diminish even further at the very end, where the lone clarinetist holds over a couple of measures, fading into nothing. I hope your students will enjoy this piece and take from it a greater appreciation for the way making music can express feelings.

Boismortier is considered to be one of the most popular and most hard-working composers of his time. The original title of this sonata in A Minor indicates flutes, violins and other instruments as well suited for performance. The composer arranged the first melody part in such a way that it can be played by an alto recorder without any changes. Scored for string chorus, the sonata achieves a very good tonal effect. With soloistic scoring, three equal instruments (e.g. three violins) or three completely different instruments (e.g. flute, violin, oboe) are best suited for the performance of the upper parts.

This concertino was written to a commission by Japanese percussionist Kazuko Ogawa as an addition to Satoshi Yagisawa’s concerto series (trumpet, trombone, marimba, saxophone, and clarinet with wind orchestra). The world premiere was performed by Kasukabe Kyoei Junior and Senior High School Wind Orchestra with guest percussionist Kazuko Ogawa, conducted by Jotaro Tsuga, director of the orchestra in 2009. The effective usage of the solo percussion and elegant orchestration has been greatly appreciated since the premiere. Satoshi Yagisawa’s style has been dramatic but in this piece a new XXXX of writing can be found. Grade 5 for the soloist.

The first movement of this work, an Allegretto, begins with a fanfare-like opening. After a number of other melody lines, a reprise of the beginning follows, which ends in a cadenza for the soloist. Movement two, titled Rituel, is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band within a stately melody. In the final movement, the theme of the first movement's opening returns. As the indication 'alla marcia' of the last movement suggests, this Allegro Giocoso contains march-like music that guarantees a lively conclusion. With Concertino, Kees Schoonenbeek has written an appealing work that is very suitable for a beginner soloist. It is also available for trumpet andpiano.

This concert work, the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states, is a suite in three movements, based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments, in major and in minor, as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration, as a blues, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process, all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!De Amerikaanse staat Arkansas wordt wel ‘The Natural State’ of ‘The Land of Opportunity’ genoemd.

In the final movement, the theme of the first movement’s opening returns. As the indication ‘alla marcia’ of the last movement suggests, this Allegro Giocoso contains march-like music that guarantees a lively conclusion. With Concertino, Kees Schoonenbeek has written an appealing work that is very suitable for a beginner soloist. It is also available for trumpet andpiano.

Pietro Nardini was the most important pupil of Tartini regarding both violin playing and composition. Like his teacher, he attached special significance to the beauty of sound and the -suitability for singing, as is shown by reports of his contemporaries. Leopold Mozart, for example, wrote in one of his letters that he had heard a certain Nardini and that there could not be heard anything more beautiful in the tonal beauty, purity, harmony and in the singable taste. The two concertos in A major and F major consist of three movements with the traditional tempo order quick-slow-quick, each movement giving the soloist the opportunity to play a solo cadence.
