Craig Hella Johnson Choral Series-Michael Ippolito's Rain Song for SATB choir with Viola or Cello. With long sections of aleatoric sounds a Viola scordatura and a text filled with duality of imagery this is an anthem for theadvanced and adventurous choir. The Viola (or Cello) is not an accompaniment instrument but rather a “full musical partner” and will require a fine player.

At the start of Belgian composer Rudi Tas' haunting setting of the Miserere a solo cello rises out of a vocal cluster. The music gradually becomes more intense; the voices plead for mercy. The work ends with a fading vocalcluster that reveals the solo cello's high E.

A jolly Christmas carol-This lively carol was commissioned in 2005 by Lichfield Cathedral Special Choir (now called the Cathedral Chorus) to celebrate the birth of Hannah Scriven and Holly Mason the daughters of the two cathedral organists at that time. The words were specially written by Tony Barnard the then Canon Chancellor at Lichfield and a member of the choir. This carol whilst not entirely foreign to my normal style touches more ‘country and western’/popular buttons than I am in the habit of touching. But I wanted to write a tuneful piece which swayed and danced and reflected the colourful imagery of Tony Barnard’s text. Be Merciful Be Gracious is a chorus from Edward Elgar’s ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ scored for SATB Voices and Organ or Piano accompaniment in this Novello edition.The Dream of Gerontius Op. 38 is a work for Voices and orchestra in two parts composed by Edward Elgar in 1900 to text from the poem by John Henry Newman. It relates the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into Purgatory. Elgar disapproved of the use of the term 'oratorio' for the work though his wishes are not always followed.The piece is widely regardedas Elgar's finest choral work and some consider it his masterpiece.Sir Edward Elgar was an English composer many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations the Pomp and Circumstance Marches concertos for Violin and Cello and two symphonies. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.

However often Bennett may have employed serial techniques or introduced jazz and modern elements into his work his Choral compositions are always tonal and melodic. In A Farewell To Arms he displays an exquisite sensitivity to the poetry of Ralph Knevet (17th century) and George Peele (16th century) and their mediations on the homely life after years spent soldiering.
