Rheinberger's popularity during his lifetime was based, for the most part, on his secular choral music. His cycles for men's and women's choir, most of which were commissioned works, are contained in two volumes of the Complete Edition (vols. 19 and 20). Among this music there are humorous songs and drinking songs, idyllic settings of texts drawn from nature, and songs in a folk-like idiom which are light and easily performable, as well as several more ambitious compositions which were written for choral competitions in Rheinberger's day.

This composition is a Chilean 'Cueca,' which is a dance found in many South American countries that is de rived from the Spanish 'Jota' and contains several elements from the 'Fandango.' There are many different styles of 'Cuecas', depending on the nature of the texts or the region from which they come. However the rhythm is mostly written in 6/8, alternating sometimes with 3/4, and in minor keys, and it is danced in single and independent couples. Because of its melancholic character, this 'Cueca' is thought to have derived from the Peruvian 'Yaraví' and it comes from the province of Sucre and was composed in the times of the Chaco war (that occured between Bolivia and Paraguay in 1932-1935). Most of the authors who composed texts and popular tunes in this period are anonymous. The instruments that accompany the 'Cueca' are generally guitar, bombo and charango.

Far from Home is originally for solo cello based on my exploration of the use of Western instrumental and compositional techniques to express the emotional and cultural characteristics of Thai traditional music. This piece contains both lyrical and virtuosic passages that derived from the traditional Thai fiddle playing and Krao-nai style, which is considered to be among the most demanding styles for solo instruments. Although the musical expression and techniques used in this piece are somewhat different from the traditional Krao-nai style, it still convey the emotions and cultural references of that style. Far from Home was graciously commissioned by the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra with the generous support of Dr. Sugree Charoensook.
