First Steps For Cello Op.101 is a fantastic collection of fifty studies for Cello with second cello ad lib. composed by Sebastian Lee. This is an excellent resource for cellists of elemenatry to intermediate level who wish to further develop stylistic awareness and technical control.

Transcriber's Note: The poems op.32 were written in 1903. The rst poem remained one of Scriabin's favourite compositions and would appear in most of his piano recitals. The great cellist Gregor Piatigorsky transcribed it for cello and piano a couple of decades later. I owned a copy of the music from age 15 or so but when I eventually decided to learn it I was vexed by the changes Piatigorsky had made to the original score.These include the simpli cation of rhythms dynamics and anything eccentric and typical of Scriabin. During the process of making my own version I soon realised that the middle section did not bene t from beingbroken up into separate lines. While the piano part remains untouched I have borrowed material from the second poem to ll what might otherwise feel like gaps in the cello part (this version can be heard together with pianist Bengt Forsberg on the CD called Smörgåsbord for the Hyperion label). Interestingly the story around the tempestuous second poem had originally been conceived as an aria for a planned opera. As with Brahms and the opening of the E minor sonata op.38 Scriabin uses the word legato rather than indicating this with slurs (see piano part). - Mats Lidström. 

Fifteen very playable Cello duets in contrasting styles. These duets have been written with an easier second Cello part and a more demanding first Cello part. Not too demanding in most cases so that roles can be reversed.

A work for four cellos based on J. S. Bach?s Suite n.5 for solo cello. It is part of the 'Transformation' series that attempts to transport Bach?s oeuvre into the modern era to convert Bach?s writing into that of today. The work is composed of four successively played parts. Though the sonority is completely different each part is closely related to Suite n.5.Part 1 Densité (density): each semiquaver from the beginning of the prelude is extended to form dense chords.Part 2 Chant (song): a new melodic line emerges from different transpositions of the Sarabande?s melodic lines.Part 3 Tempus fugit: fragments from the Courante pass quickly while the Gigue?s basic rhythmis repeated relentlessly.Part 4 Dans le temps qui s?étire (as time stretches): the Fugue subject from the second half of the Prelude appears about ten times bringing various developments.

On The Fiddle consists of three pieces derived from scores to three Peter Greenaway films. The first piece Full Fathom Five is a version of the Shakespeare song setting made for Prospero'sBooks (1990).The second Angelfish Decay is an arrangement of an arrangement: the music for the speeded up time lapse decaying animal sequences in A Zed And Two Noughts (1985) was written for twoviolins and a harpsichord. This was subsequently 'reduced' to a violin solo for Zoo Caprices (1986). For On The Fiddle a piano part has been added.The final piece Miserere Paraphrase was writtenfor use in The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover (1989) and is a transcription of Nyman's setting of the 'Miserere' text (Psalm 51) sung in the film by a boy soprano and mixed chorus.This version for celloand piano written in 1997. Written by Gabriel Yared composer to the scores for The English Patient Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr Ripley this folio of 22 original Cello pieces has been designed to inspire andencourage duettists especially teacher/pupil collaborations.The idea grew out of composer Gabriel Yared’s own learning experience which suggested a need for one part to be written for the experienced teacher and anotherfor the developing novice.The duets themselves progress from beginner to advanced levels gradually addressing new technical problems as they go as well as providing varied and stimulating music to play.Theaccompanying CD includes a full recording of each duet as well as two alternative playalong versions each giving prominence to one part or the other.The publication comes with individual parts completing a package thatwas developed composed and produced as a completely original way of learning cello duets.

J. S. Bach’s two-part keyboard pieces form a significant body of musical literature but only occasionally have they been arranged for strings. This carefully transcribed collection of cello duets and its two companion volumes Duets for Two Violins (MB # 21437) and Duets for Two Violas (MB # 21438) bring many additions taken from Bach’s suites preludes and inventions to the string player’s repertoire. Intermediate and advanced instrumentalistswill delight in the musical complexity contrapuntal dialogue and variety of moods in these pieces. Since bowing and fingering preferences vary greatly among string players editorial marks have been kept to a minimum. These arrangements are an attractive valuable addition to string ensemble work.

  Excellently arranged cello duets of Bizet's Toreador Song and Habanera from Carmen Mozart's Non piu andrai from The Marriage of Figaro and Puccini's Your tiny hand is frozen from La Bohème. Tune and accompaniment is shared between the two players making them a lot of fun to play. Suitable for amateurs students of at least Grade 6 playing standard (UK examination boards)  and professionals they make maximum use of the range of tone colours a cello can produce. The Double Concerto was commissioned by the BBC for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra to perform at the International Cello Festival in Manchester on 30 April 1992 with soloists Ralph Kirshbaum and Gregor Horsch and conductor Raymond Leppard.

This companion to Mel Bay's popular American Fiddle Method opens up the world of fiddling to cellists at a beginner-intermediate level. Unlike many books for Violas and Cellos which simply transpose thetunes the authors of this method Brian Wicklund and Faith Farr have gone to considerable effort arranging the tunes to be both playable and true to the original melody and key. Variations to the tunes areincluded illustrating how they can serve as a basis for improvisation. Finally fiddlers violists and cellists can jam together! Composer's Note When I considered the ensemble of eight cellos I first thought of matt and dark textures. I also wanted to go back to some ideas on symmetry. While I was pondering all that I saw snow flakes fallingfrom the dark sky of the Finnish autumn. Focusing on the snow the idea of writing variations on it and its various forms became clearer in my mind.Nuages de neige is a uniform and linear texture in which I realise my firstimpressions of that ensemble. The two Etoiles de neige are based on the idea of symmetry and repetition: the first one develops up to a certain point where it doubles back as in a mirror image the second one consists of eightsections in which the harmonic structure is repeated as well as a linear gesture that becomes ever more present. Aguilles de glace focuses on different pizzicati and superimposed ostinati. With Fleurs de neige I sought to recallthe texture of those harmonic trills at the end of the first section although more airy and diversified here. Kaija Saariaho
