The German Requiem is one of the world's most famous requiems, even though it does not set the customary requiem text to music. Brahms did not want to follow the Latin Catholic funeral mass, addressing the Last Judgment's terror and sinful human beings' redemption through death on the cross. His attention, on the contrary, was on Biblical texts that focus on human transience and comfort: comfort to the bereaved and comfort to all who fear death. To some extent, it could be called the epitome of Brahms's work. In the relevant volume of the new Brahms Complete Edition, on which this new practical edition is based, editors Michael Musgrave and Michael Struck clear up all sorts of legends, errors, and erroneous readings. Brahms's subsequent minor compositional changes are taken into account, poor decisions in previous editions are corrected, and the Bible texts sung contain writing and meaning corrections. In addition, the texts elucidate many myths about the composition's origin. Thus, this Urtext edition creates a fresh perspective on the People's Requiem, as Brahms would have preferred to call the composition. This new B&H publication is extremely good value, and it really does breathe new life into an old master. The pages of the full score are delightfully easy on the eye. The edition's visual effect is precise, lucid, and sympathetic - as, indeed, a good performance of Brahms's choral masterpiece should be.(Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ)authoritative music text based on the current state of research; erroneous traditional readings corrected; orchestra material tried and tested; new piano vocal score (compact engraving, clear legibility).

Duration: full evening Text by the composer basesd on E.T.A. Hoffmann's tale of the same name from Serapionsbrudern Translation: ital. (G. Trampus), La sposa sorteggiata Place and time: Berlin, um 1820 Characters: Der Kommissionsrat Voswinkel (baritone) - Albertine, his daughter (mezzo-soprano) - Thusman, Freier (tenor) - Edmund Lehsen, paintor, Freier (tenor) - Baron Bensch, Freier (tenor) - the goldsmith Leonhard (baritone) - the jew Manasse (bass) - the valet Voswinkels - crowd, a Chancre (silent parts) In Busoni's musical evolution, this work marks an important phase of radical change after works inspired by Brahms and Verdi. The composer's compositional style became increasingly revolutionary between the sketch of the shport score (1908) and the completion of the orchestral score (1911).Busoni took the greatest care in preparing the definitive form of the work. He asserted that there was invention in every bar, and assigned an important role to the use of music from other sources: the Hebrew march from Rossini's Mose, for example, or a German dance by Mozart, military music, American-Indian pentatonic music, Gregorian plainchant, melodies from the synagogue and even quotes from his own works. With these stylistic means, Busoni followed Hoffmann's serapiontic principle and came closer to his idea of a timeless world music without borders.

The literary genre of the Nanie is a song of lament that dates back to classical antiquity. Brahms' Naenie op. 84 is a requiem in honor of the artist Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880), whom Brahms greatly revered. After a first draft in the summer of 1880, Brahms set Schiller's poem Nenie (It was not until the preparations for the printing that Brahms changed the spelling to Nanie) one year later, when he was residing in Pressbaum near Vienna. He personally conducted the first performance in Zurich on 3 December 1881. The work is dedicated to Henriette Feuerbach, the artist's mother..

Brahms' Piano Symphony in the Urtext of the complete editionJohannes Brahms enjoyed a bit of understatement every now and then, and whenever his second piano concerto was the object of discussion, he called it his little concerto - although it was more than clear that, with its four movements (including Scherzo), he was giving his contemporaries something truly symphonic to chew on. The press didn't hesitate long: soon it was being derisively called piano symphony, which, however, did nothing to prevent its popularity. Brahms himself and other pianists played the work everywhere in the 1880s, and the piano reduction was so successful that it had to be reprinted three times within three months after its first printing. The Urtext edition follows the text of the respective volume in the Brahms Complete Edition published in 2013. It takes the first printing of the score as the main source; moreover, both the autograph as well as the printed reduction provided further information with which engraving errors of the first edition could be corrected.
