Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80 (Carus 31.080/00) is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most frequently-performed cantatas. But the well-known form of the work, with its great opening chorale chorus, represents the final stage of a multi-layered version history, beginning with the cantata Alles, was von Gott geboren BWV 80a, probably composed for Oculi Sunday (the third Sunday in Lent) 1716. As no cantatas were performed during Passiontide in Leipzig, if Bach wanted to re-use the cantata he had to rewrite it for another Sunday or feast day. Reformation Day suggests itself, as Bach had also incorporated the hymn Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott into the Oculi cantata (as an instrumental cantus firmus in the opening movement and in the final chorale). The first version of the Reformation cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80b (Carus 31.080/50) was simply expanded by the addition of chorale movements, then the movements of the Oculi cantata, slightly altered, were included in the cantata in the form known today as BWV 80.Only the text of the Oculi cantata Alles, was von Gott geboren BWV 80a survives today. However, the early version of the cantata can easily be extrapolated from the two later versions. This first published reconstruction to date, by the renowned Bach scholar Klaus Hofmann, represents a welcome addition to the small repertoire of Bach cantatas for Passion Sundays.

Bach's cantata BWV 151, whose wonderfully heartfelt opening aria has been rightly numbered among Bach's most inspired ideas (Alfred Durr), was composed for the 3rd day of Christmas 1725. Flute and oboe d'amore lend pastoral coloring to the chamber music sound picture. The oboe d'amore was not originally included in Bach's score; after completing the score he added the part to the orchestra for the first performance. In a later performance about 1728-1731 Bach replaced the flute by a solo violin, adding various performing instructions and ornaments, of which a flautist can make use in his originally rather modest part. This new edition by Klaus Hofmann replaces the 1962 publication by Diethard Hellmann. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3115100.

The cantata Ich liebe den Hochsten von ganzem Gemute (I love the Almighty with all of my spirit) BWV 174 was composed for Whit Monday 1729. It probably belongs to Bach's fourth cycle of cantatas, known as the Picander cycle. Most of the cantata is taken up by the introductory Sinfonia. This is a reworking of the first movement of the famous third Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1048. Bach took the movement almost unaltered and simply added wind parts to strengthen the sound to the nine string parts (three violins, three violas, three violoncelli) and basso continuo - two corni da caccia and two oboes, reinforced by two violins, an oboe da caccia (taille) and a viola. The following movements (aria, recitative, aria) form a distinct contrast with their chamber music scoring (two oboes or one or two string parts with basso continuo). A simple four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score available separately - see item CA.3117400.

The cantata Sei Lob und Ehr dem hochsten Gut (All glory to the Lord of Lords) BWV 117 is one of a small group of Bach's chorale cantatas which use exclusively the text of the chorale, including in the three recitatives and three arias. Only the autograph score of the cantata survives; although this enables an approximate dating to be made (c. 1730), it does not give the occasion for which the cantata was written. The choice of chorale may indicate it was composed for a wedding. Recently it has been suggested that the occasion for its composition was the birthday of the Duke of Weissenfels in 1731; but there is no firm evidence to support either theory. The cantata opens with an extended movement for chorus in which Bach contrasts the concertante orchestra with festive, almost homophonic choral writing. This chorus movement is repeated at the end. A simple chorale movement which comes fourth indicates that the nine-movement cantata was performed in two sections. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3111700.
