Sally Ann Morris and Adam Tice began working together in 2008, when Sally was asked to compose a few tunes for Adam’s first collection, Woven into Harmony. This initial collaboration was the beginning of what has become a dynamic partnership. In this symbiotic pairing new inspiration emerged, generating contemporary but timeless music where text and tune seamlessly unite. The a cappella choral writing on “Will You Hold Me in the Light” and “This Is My Body” is so lush and intricate that accompaniment is not necessary, while the poetry of “God Give Me Faith like a Child” and “Breath of God, Breath of Peace” illustrates the innocence and fearlessness essential in our love and trust of God. Stylistically ranging from a cappella choral to Latin jazz, each piece offers a musical and textual sophistication that powerfully conveys themes of journey and longing for God’s guidance.

The fact that Hermann Schroeder ranks among the most important composers of Catholic church music in the 20th century shows especially in the simple church music form of the choral setting, e. g. in his setting of the sacred song Unuberwindlich starker Held, Sankt Michael. With his own typical archaic tonal language, Schroeder creates an a cappella choral setting (SATB) in which the dignity and the admiration of the heroic deeds of the Archangel Michael find their musical expression in a very compact form. The underlying melody (GL 924) dates from 1623. The author of the text of the Song of Michael is the German hymn writer Friedrich Spee. A very charming choral setting that can be easily mastered by any church choir; its five verses have to be sung alternately by the choir and the congregation. Apart from the a cappella choral setting, the practical congregational edition also contains a chorale prelude and the organ chorale which can, of course, be used as accompaniment for the congregation, but also for the choral setting.

'Valet will ich dir geben - Du arge, falsche Welt' Based on the sacred poem of Valerius Herberger and written in the style of Melchior Teschner's chorale melody, the French composer Naji Hakim (*1955) wrote a moving work for choir and organ. The five chorale variations lead from heavenly joy in the choral parts to a charming setting for solo organ; then Hakim moves on to a setting for a cappella choir and a canon for soprano and alto with organ accompaniment. The expressive work ends with a lively toccata which is complemented by an expressive adagio in the middle.

Each of the five connected movements in this choral cycle contains references to 'Light,' assembled from various sacred Latin texts. I composed Lux Aeterna in response to my mother's final illness and found great personal comfortand solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light, a universal symbol of illumination at all levels - spiritual, artistic and intellectual. The work opens and closes with the beginning and ending of theRequiem Mass, with the central three movements drawn respectively from the Te Deum, O Nata Lux and Veni, Sancte Spiritus. The opening Introitus introduces several themes that recur later in the work and includes an extended canonon et lux perpetua. In Te, Domine, Speravi contains, among other musical elements, the cantus firmus Herzliebster Jesu (from the Nuremburg Songbook, 1677) and a lengthy inverted canon on fiat misericordia. O Nata Lux and Veni,Sancte Spiritus are paired songs, the former an a cappella motet at the center of the work and the latter a spirited, jubilant canticle. A quiet setting of the Agnus Dei precedes the final Lux Aeterna, which reprises the openingsection of the Introitus and concludes with a joyful celebratory Alleluia. --Morten Lauridsen.

The movements of 'Missa di Sant' Anna' were composed over the course of several years, each one for the 'Madchenchor am Essener Dom' (girls' choir of the Cathedral of Essen). The title of the Mass is related to the dedication of the 'Agnus Dei', commemorating the innocent victims of the massacre in the Tuscany village of S. Anna di Stazzema in the year of war 1944 and appreciating the idea and spirit of the peace centre there.'Kyrie' and 'Agnus Dei' are sung solely by the choir a cappella, whereas 'Gloria' and 'Sanctus' are jointly sung by choir and congregation. This exciting piece of music can be performed either with organ accompaniment or with additional brass instruments.
