The Psalms inspired Mendelssohn throughout his working life, and, aside from a cappella settings, he left behind five great orchestral Psalms. Schumann assesed in 1837 that Psalm 42 was the highest point that he [Mendelssohn] reached as a composer for the church. Indeed the highest point recent church music has reached at all. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007200.

With its tonal language of subjective avowal, the first of Beethoven's two masses opens up new worlds of expression for the liturgical texts of the Mass which are expressly modern and point towards the future. Not to be considered a preliminary work to the Missa solemnis, it is an entirely independent work which set standards for the further development of settings of the Mass in the 19th century. Its newness, of which the composer himself was fully aware (I do not speak gladly of my Mass, or of myself, but I do believe that I have treated the text in a manner in which only few have treated it.), paves a way to an hitherto unknown, contemporary avenue to faith which today is still current. Carus presents this important work of church music history in a new critical edition by the Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4068800.

The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. A special charm of the mass is the fact that it dispenses with soloists. In this mass, exemplary for Cherubini's church music is the richness of color in the treatment of the orchestra, as well as in the choral parts, and the expressiveness of the dynamic nuances. Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) was composed in the spring of 1786 to fulfill a commission from Joseph II for performance during a visit to Vienna by the Governor-General of the Netherlands. The visitors were meant to be entertained with a short German and an Italian musical comedy during a festival arranged on short notice in Schonbrunn Palace. The choice of composers fell to Mozart and Salieri. Both pieces spoofed the theatrical practices of the day. Der Schauspieldirektor, by Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, has a loosely-constructed plot that hinges on the vanity of opera singers and the empty-headedness of many traveling companies. Frank Lustig wants to create a new theatrical troupe, for which Herr Eiler is willing to supply money, but only on condition that his lady friend is allowed to join. In the course of the piece, appearances are made by other ladies with resonant names who want to be retained as singers and who attempt to outdo each other until reason is allowed to prevail. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the death of Louis Spohr, for the first time Carus is publishing a critical edition of The Last Judgment, the most important of his four oratorios. It was first performed on Good Friday, 1826 in Kassel. It is based on the theologically most significant portions of the Revelations of John in the New Testament, whose visions of death and eternity Spohr vividly portrayed in music. The work represents an important enrichment to the repertoire of the oratorio, especially suitable for the end of the church year. It is captivating on account of its masterful instrumentation, excellent use of chromaticism, large-scale solo recitatives and accessible choral passages filled with heartfelt sensitivity on the one hand, and exciting drama on the other. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2300300.

Rheinberger began work on his second Symphony during his visit to Italy with his wife in 1874. He was commissioned to write it by an orchestral society in Florence - an indication that his reputation had already spread throughout Europe. The autograph score contains a poem by his wife Fanny, which in four sections expressed the moods of impressions of the visit which seem to underlie the symphony. Contemporaries praised particularly the beauty of the Adagio. The work is here presented for the first time in an edition based critically on the sources. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5008700.

Johann Gottlieb Naumann, who today is becoming increasingly well known, achieved recognition during his lifetime as a composer of operas, among them the first Swedish national opera, Gustaf Wasa. In addition he wrote a large number of sacred compositions for the Court of Dresden, where he was employed for many years, including the present Missa in D minor, which was still performed well into the 20th century. This work, probably composed for Christmas in 1794, displays a decidedly pastoral character in the Gloria and Agnus Dei and moreover, is distinguished by charming solo woodwind parts. Carus 70.301/10, which is part of the material associated with this piece, can be used as the choral score. Gabriel Faure composed the Cantique de Jean Racine in 1865, the prizewinning work for the completion of his musical training. The composer expanded the original scoring for choir and organ by adding a string accompaniment; the version with orchestra was first performed in 1906. As a text Faure chose a French adaptation by Jean Racine of the Latin hymn Consors paterni luminis. The Cantique already displays the characteristics of an expressive choral setting typical for Faure, as well as the finely worked out orchestral accompaniment, and together with the Requiem, composed considerably later, it is among the most popular works of the composer.
