Andalag # 4 - Duo for 2 Bassoons (2011). Part of Andalag - Suite in 11 movements. Programme note: Some years ago I was asked by the Faroese ensemble Aldubaran to compose duets for the woodwinds within the ensemble. The idea then came to me to write a Suite with the name Andalag in 11 movements. 8 movements are duets and are approximately 4 min. long. 2 movements are quartets and are approximately 8 min. long, and 1 movement is an octet which is approximately 16 min. long. In other words, the Suite will last approximately 60 min. The (octet) instrumentation is 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns and 2 bassoons. The Faroese word andalag has a multilayerd meaning. The first half of the word is anda and means to breath or spirit, and the second half of the word lag means melodi, mood or layer. I use two small ideas in this Suite. One idea is in a sort of major mood and the other in a sort of minor mood. Sunleif Rasmussen, May 2013.

The High Songs, a commission from 12 bands across the country, became a 24-minute suite for Amplified Cello and Chamber Winds of five movements, an instrumental song cycle featuring the solo cello in high tessitura. The calm opening (Nepenthe) is followed by a big band evocation (Moto Perpetuo). Pann further explores the ensemble with Passacaglias and Adjusting the Torque (a nod to fellow composer Michael Torke), then finishes the suite with a simple Song for Heidi, which features a piano duet. When Carter Pann writes a substantial work exploring the vitality and colors of the wind ensemble, the results are guaranteed to be ravishing.

A 1984 composition, in memoriam to Hyla's father, who died in that year, Pre-Pulse Suspended is a tight piece structurally, but it covers a lot of ground in its concise single movement. The striking opening, a gritty and incisive duet for violin and bass clarinet, with each instrument restricted to a very narrow compass like a genie struggling to escape from a bottle, is mined continually in the course of the piece. The melancholic tone of the Ney (the Persian bamboo flute) is known for its alluring sound, emulating the human voice. In Persian literature, the Ney is considered a mystic instrument capable of expressing deep human emotions. In writing my flute concerto, I aimed not only to highlight the modern flautist's ability to play agile and brilliant passages but also to emulate the delicate sound of the Ney, particularly in extended solo flute passages. Two prominent characters permeate the first movement of my concerto. They are marked in the score as lamentoso, and con spirito, expressing grief and loss, and joy of living respectively. The lament is mostly expressed in several extended cadenzas for solo flute while the con spirito consists of robust and energetic fast sections played by all forces of the orchestra. Apart from these two characters there are moments of mystery, comedy and the grotesque, among others. In the second movement, the lyrical and poetic character of the flute is prominently presented in dream-like passages surrounded by shimmering and tender orchestral colors. The solo flute is left out in an agitated middle section that references the first movement. In the third section of the movement the solo flute returns in meditative fashion culminating in a duet with the harp. The third movement is written as one continuous quasi scherzo, challenging the limits of agility and brilliance of the flute. Some of the materials from the earlier movements are presented again with joyous character. The coda elevates the concerto into its brightest and most festive character, driving to the end with relentless energy. The melancholic tone of the Ney (the Persian bamboo flute) is known for its alluring sound, emulating the human voice.  In Persian literature, the Ney is considered a mystic instrument capable of expressing deep human emotions. In writing my flute concerto, I aimed not only to highlight the modern flautist’s ability to play agile and brilliant passages but also to emulate the delicate sound of the Ney, particularly in extended solo flute passages.

Inspired by the alluring, human-like sound of the Ney (a Persian bamboo flute), Ranjbaran aims not only to highlight the modern flutist’s ability to play agile and brilliant passages, but also to emulate the delicate sound of the Ney, particularly in extended solo passages. The three-movement 27-minute concerto was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra for its principal flutist Jeffrey Khaner. The piano reduction (published separately) was designed by the composer to be practical in recital performances. In the style of commedia dell'arteIn 1918 Gabriel Faure, then 73 years old, received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell'arte. The four-movement orchestral suite op. 112, consisting of Ouverture, Menuet, Gavotte and Pastorale, combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Faure's last composition for orchestra, the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The op. 112 orchestral suite demonstrates how the composer, now older and more experienced, reworked and improved his earlier music. This scholarly-critical edition of the four-movement Masques et Bergamasques op. 112 is based on Gabriel Faure The Complete Works, Volume IV/2.

Renowned composer, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was a German composer and child prodigy. His Duo Concertant remains prominent to this day, and Léon Grisez's transcription for two clarinets makes the work even more accessible. Composed in 1833, Duo Concertant was composed during a time when Mendelssohn was gaining fame in both Germany and Britain. The work, originally composed for clarinet and bassethorn, is made up of three movements; 1) Presto, 2) Andante, and 3) Allegro Grazioso. Grisez's arrangement of Mendelssohn's Duo Concertant cannot be missed by aspiring clarinet duos.
