Instead of an opening chorus Cantata BWV 42 begins with a magnificent Sinfonia in the style of the Brandenburg Concertos. It is possible that Bach took this movement from a concerto which he had composed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligato oboe and bassoon, could be derived from the middle movement of this concerto. C. P. E. Bach's nine-movement Magnificat (1749), the first great vocal work from his Berlin years, is among the most magnificent sounding, in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the Hymn to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur, dignity, polyphonic and concertante choral movements, sensitive (empfindsam) and expressive arias, a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.), which is almost one hour in duration, would be well suited, for example, as the central work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concert programme. The Carus program featuring music of the Court of Dresden has been expanded with the publication of the first edition of the great masses of Johann David Heinichen, who, next to Hasse and Zelenka, was the most important musical representative of this capital of Saxony. A peculiarity of this work is the fact that Heinichen inserted an actual concerto movement for solo flute, 2 oboes, strings and continuo between the Gloria and Credo, which recommends the Mass for concert performances. The Missa pastoralis in C, published here for the first time, dates from about 1808. It belongs to a cycle of sacred pieces, a ,,Cursus sacro-harmonicus, which Ryba planned as Ordinarium and Proprium settings for all the Sundays and feast days of the church year. The Missa pastoralis in C is a pastoral Mass for the matutinal service at Christmas. As in the Missa Pastoralis in B flat, in this Mass Ryba makes use of concertante instruments: trumpet and a bassoon, an instrument seldom employed solistically in a Mass, but which gives this work a unique character. Bach's cantata BWV 132 was written for the 4th Sunday in Advent, and the autograph score is dated 1715. It was composed while Bach was at Weimar, to a libretto by the Weimar Court Preacher Salomon Franck. Its subject matter is the testimony of John the Baptist addressed to the Christian community and to individual believers. Since the original concluding chorale, the fifth verse of the hymn Herr Christ der einig Gotts Sohn (Elisabeth Cruziger), has been lost, here the cantata ends with the last movement (transposed from B flat to A major), to the same words, of the cantata BWV 164.
