Chamber Ensemble SKU: HL.14021749 For Percussion and Orchestra. Co...(+)
Chamber Ensemble SKU: HL.14021749 For Percussion and Orchestra. Composed by Poul Ruders. Music Sales America. Classical. Score. Edition Wilhelm Hansen #KP00076. Published by Edition Wilhelm Hansen (HL.14021749). ISBN 9788759889817. Danish. Poul Ruders' MONODRAMA, dedicated to percussion virtuoso Gert Sorensen and commissioned by The Danish Radio, was written in New York in the early winter 1988 and makes the centre as well as the middle of the tri-part opus called The Drama Trilogy. All three works employ the word Drama in their title, Drama in the original meaning of the word: event. No specified event, but a premonition or omen rather, that something is afoot, a free Drama-offer from which anyone may populate the stage of his private, inner theatre. The first piece of the series DRAMAPHONIA for piano and chamber ensemble was premiered in London in the spring of 1988 by Lontano and Poul Rosenbaum. This piece is emotionally and rhythmically unstable as opposed to MONODRAMA (single-event) which is modelled from the archetypal idea of obtaining accomplishment from nothingness. The 31 instruments of the orchestra (no flutes and no violins or violas) are more or less wrapped around the solo-part to become one with that and thus emerge as one, gigantic percussion instrument. The rhythmical patterns of the orchestral part more or less follow those of the percussionpart, a single-event also on the rhythmical level. After 20 minutes climbing toward the peak of rage, the composition casts its slough and is reborn into a chorale-like march and the struggle between totally depopulated sound-scapes and ferociously roaring sub-oceanic storms begin and the piece paces toward the abyss; rage becomes despondency, New Rage as opposed to New Age, the spineless worshipper of beauty without pain. The third instalment of the DRAMA TRILOGY, the cello concerto POLYDRAMA will be premiered in Stockholm May 1990.MONODRAMA lasts aprox. 32 minutes.Poul Ruders. $125.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Concert Band/Harmonie and Percussion Solo - Grade 3 SKU: BT.DHP-1124904-140(+)
Concert Band/Harmonie and Percussion Solo - Grade 3 SKU: BT.DHP-1124904-140 Composed by Satoshi Yagisawa. Solo Spectrum. Solo & Concerto. Score Only. Composed 2012. 28 pages. De Haske Publications #DHP 1124904-140. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-1124904-140). 9x12 inches. English-German-French-Dutch. This concertino was written to a commission by Japanese percussionist Kazuko Ogawa as an addition to Satoshi Yagisawa’s concerto series (trumpet, trombone, marimba, saxophone, and clarinet with wind orchestra). The world premiere was performed by Kasukabe Kyoei Junior and Senior High School Wind Orchestra with guest percussionist Kazuko Ogawa, conducted by Jotaro Tsuga, director of the orchestra in 2009. The effective usage of the solo percussion and elegant orchestration has been greatly appreciated since the premiere. Satoshi Yagisawa’s style has been dramatic but in this piece a new XXXX of writing can be found.Grade 5 for the soloist
Grad 5 for the soloist
Grade 5 for the soloist. $42.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Duration 1200 seconds. Edition Wilhelm Hansen #KP00615. Published by Edition Wilhelm Hansen (HL.14003062). ISBN 9788759870075. 12.0x16.5x0.7 inches. Danish. Per Norgard BACH TO THE FUTUREFor many years I have been specially fascinated by three of the preludes of Bach's Well-tempered Piano, and I wish with this concerto-version for percussion-duo and orchestra to highlight some of the structural aspects of these pieces: It is my belief that there is a tradition in the music history, that makes it possible to let certain germs in an earlier period unfold into new, but not heterogenious, dimensions of a perhaps several hundred years later phase of the tradition. This concerto is a result of several years collaboration with Uffe Savery and Morten Friis (Safri-Duo), as well in original compositions - (Resonances, Repercussion, Resume in EchoZone I-III) as in arrangements of the 3 Bach preludes, preparing for the enormous stylistic challenges of this work.A few introductory comments to each movement:I Movement: The archetypal sequence of broken chords within C-major has established itself as almost a cultural code, allowing the composer of 1996 to tell his tale-in-tones only by stressing and colouring the tones in the original piece without changing the pitches or (relative) durations as a 'palimpsest' containing as well the old as the new musical tale simultaneously. Later in the movement, this singleline is multiplied by the, till then discrete, but permanently pervading, proportion - throughout the piece - very close to the 'Golden Section'(= 3:5:8.t.i:8 before repetition, 5 before starting anew from the deepest tone, 3 as the rest etc. unchanged). The 3 tonal levels as well as the 3 relative speeds are treated according to these proportions for certain passages, but even in those the main focal point is directed at the freely invented melody (by me) incarnating itself solely by the unpermutad sequels of the original prelude.II Movement: One feature of the F sharp-prelude pervades all the six minutes-long second movement: A 4 times identical rhythmic pattern = 6:4:3:2:3:4:6 - as an hourglass-shaped timeshape - inspired me by the closeness of this pattern to a shape within the infinity-drumming of my invention, called Wide-Fan and Narrow-Fan , referring to pattern consisting of 8:4:2:1:2:4:8, the familiarity with the above - quoted one being obvious. New and old elaborations of this pattern-pair permeates the movement, especially since the Safri-Duo by their performance of my Repercussion had augmented my appetite for including this idiom in a wider context:III Movement: Without the existence of the d-minor-prelude I doubt that I would have dared to write a work like this, since it is the inexhaustible, rare quality and pecularity of this piece, which has stimulated my feeling of wonder and 'modernity' (or: eternity!) of this piece, of which I know of no equal in its special respect: the perpetual ambiguity of melodic foothold in the rhythmic ostinato of a broken descending triad, co. $82.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

A recipient of the New Music USA 2013 Live Music For Dance Award commissioning grant, Not Alone is inspired by the ancient Chinese poet Li Bai's poem Drinking Alone under the Moon with the Shadow. The premiere was given on April 26, 2014 by the PRISM Quartet with the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, which commissioned the work to celebrate its 25th Anniversary NYC Season. From the Program Note by Matthew Levy (The PRISM Quartet), Not Alone (2014) is an interdisciplinary work...but it stands alone in a chamber music setting. The work spans a stunning range of textures, from introspective solos for each of the four saxophones to majestic hyper-active gestures. The PRISM Quartet recorded Not Alone for a 2017 release on XAS Records titled Paradigm Lost. But we're excited for a wider community of saxophonists to embrace the work, and share it with their own audiences. Not Alone is published together with Happy Birthday to PRISM, a brief miniature that Chen Yi wrote for the quartet's 20th anniversary celebration in 2004. For advanced performers._________________________Text from the scanned back cover:NOT ALONE for Saxophone QuartetHAPPY BIRTHDAY TO PRISM for Saxophone QuartetNot Alone is a 14-minute saxophone quartet and dance score inspired by the ancient Chinese poet Li Bai’s “Drinking Alone under the Moon with the Shadow.†The expansively-textured sax quartet matches the exploratory and dramatic movements and gestures in the dance. NOT ALONE was commissioned by the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company which premiered the work in collaboration with the PRISM Quartet. Also included in this publication is Chen Yi’s fascinating take on “Happy Birthday to You,†composed in celebration of Prism’s 25th anniversary season. A recipient of the New Music USA 2013 Live Music For Dance Award commissioning grant, Not Alone is inspiredby the ancient Chinese poet Li Bai’s poem “Drinking Alone under the Moon with the Shadow.†The premierewas given on April 26, 2014 by the PRISM Quartet with the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, which commissioned thework to celebrate its 25th Anniversary NYC Season. Program Note by composer Chen YiThe original inspiration for this work for both the choreographer and the composer came from the Tang Dynasty poem - Alone Under the Moon by Li Bai. The poem describes the poet being alone in a garden. The moon and his shadow became his companions that night. The choreographer brings this idea to modern life in an urban setting. She created a series of “mindscapes†which are the result of the exploration of the different mental and physical states of being alone.Through self-examination, the choreographer raises the question: are we ever really alone? Our physical being may be standing by itself, but what about our introspective self? When we are still, we let our thoughts pass by like flowing water. If we could engage with our shadows, what would it be like?Program Note by Matthew Levy, The PRISM QuartetThe PRISM Quartet has commissioned a great many composers since our founding days in 1984. Chen Yi is among ahandful of our very favorites, and one to whom we’ve returned time and time again. Her music is powerful, expansive, intimate, and draws connections between Eastern and Western, ancient and modern traditions in a voice all her own.Chen Yi has written or adapted four works for the PRISM Quartet. She penned a wonderful miniature called HappyBirth day to PRISM to celebrate the ensemble’s 20th anniversary back in 2004 (Dedication, Innova Recordings). We subsequently commissioned her to compose Septet (2008) for Erhu, Pipa, Percussion, and Saxophone Quartet(2008), premiered and recorded with the New York ensemble Music From China (Antiphony, Innova Recordings 2010).In 2015, the PRISM Quartet performed and recorded (XAS Records) a new version of her saxophone quartet concerto,BA YIN, with the University of Missouri-Kansas City Wind Ensemble under the baton of Steven Davis (originally writtenfor the Rascher Quartet and scored for saxophones and string orchestra.).Finally, Not Alone (2014) is an interdisciplinary work written for the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company with the PRISMQuartet, but it stands alone in a chamber music setting. The work spans a stunning range of textures, from introspectivesolos for each of the four saxophones to majestic hyper-active gestures. The PRISM Quartet recorded Not Alonefor a 2017 release on XAS Records titled Paradigm Lost. But we’re excited for a wider community of saxophonists toembrace the work, and share it with their own audiences. In his liner notes for the recording, WNYC’s John Schaefer writes: “As with much of her music, Chen employs percussiveeffects and glissandi; in Chinese music these are not considered “extended techniques†or special effects, but animportant part of the performer’s arsenal. Here, they help create the twilit mood of the opening moments. The piecesoon becomes more dramatic, suggesting the arrival of the drinker’s companions (real or imagined) and his or herincreasingly garrulous outbursts. Passages of consonance and discord can easily be heard as companionable singingand bouts of drunken argument. The piece bustles along on a kind of restless energy, until, finally, that restlessnesssubsides, giving way to a gently humorous ending where a short falling phrase signals the drinker falling asleep.â€. $39.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.44641192L). UPC: 680160610860. 11 x 14 inches. One of my greatest pleasures in writing a concerto is exploring the new world that opens for me each time I enter the sometimes alien, but always fascinating, world of a solo instrument or instruments. For me, the challenge is to discover the deepest nature of the solo instrument (its karma, if you will) and to allow that essential character to guide the shape and form of the work and the nature of the interaction between soloists and orchestra. In recent years, many of us have become more aware of the musical world outside the Western tradition of musics that follow different procedures and spring from other aesthetics. And contemporary percussionists have opened many of these worlds to us, as they have ventured around the globe, participating in Brazilian Samba schools, studying Gamelan and African drumming with local experts, collecting instruments from Asia and Africa and South America and the South Pacific, widening our horizons in the process. I will never forget our first meeting in Toronto when Nexus invited me into their world of hundreds of exciting percussion instruments. The vast array of instruments in the collection of the Nexus ensemble is truly global in scope as well as offering a thrilling sound-universe. I was inspired by the incredible range of sound and moved by the fact that so many of these instruments were musical reflections of a spiritual dimension. After long consideration, I decided that it would not only be impossible, but even undesirable for this Western-tradition-steeped composer to attempt to use these instruments in a culturally authentic way. My goal was an existential kind of authenticity: searching instead for universal ideas that would be true to both myself and the performers while acknowledging the traditional uses of the instruments. Since many percussion instruments are associated with various kinds of ritual, I decided that I would allow that concept to shape my piece. Rituals is in four movements, each issuing from a ritual associated with percussion, but with the orchestral interaction providing an essential element in the musical form. I. Invocation alludes to the traditions of invoking the spirit of the instruments, or the gods, or the ancestors before performing. II. Ambulation moves from a processional, through march and dance to fantasy based on all three. III. Remembrances alludes to traditions of memorializing. IV. Contests progresses from friendly competition games, contests to a suggestion of a battle of big band drummers, to warlike exchanges. In the 2nd and 4th movements, another percussion tradition, improvisation, is employed. Written into these movements are a number of seeds for improvisation. Indications in the score call for the soloists to improvise in three different ways, marked A for percussion alone; marked B for percussion with and in response to the orchestra; and C where the percussionists are free to add and embellish the written parts. These improvisations should grow out of and embellish previous motives and gestures in the movement. $95.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

While improvising tunes at the piano one day in 2009, Carter Pann stumbled upon one that sounded Brazilian or Spanish, very sultry, very patient. The opportunity to flesh out this melody came when Matt Roeder requested a new piece for the Southwest Regional CBDNA Conference. Pann was both intrigued and frightened to write a slow, silky tune for nothing but brass ensemble, and after a bit of orchestrating, he added a saxophone quartet to play lead, as if they were singing with accompanying brass. After adding contrabass and three percussionists it became apparent that Pann had fleshed out a uniquely scored tango hybrid. $160.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Score and Parts Oboe; Percussion; Piano (Score & Parts) SKU: HL.48024348 Two Pianos, Percussion, Oboe Score and Parts. Composed by Ursula Mamlok. Boosey & Hawkes Chamber Music. Classical. Softcover. 56 pages. Duration 900 seconds. Bote & Bock #M202535059. Published by Bote & Bock (HL.48024348). Her oboe concerto was used by Ursula Mamlok over the course of several decades. The first version with orchestra she wrote between 1974 and 1976, it was first performed in 2013 in Gottingen. In 1980, the composer created the second version for oboe, two piano andpercussion, which is now available here as a purchase edition; this version was premiered in 1982 at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where Ursula Mamlok worked for a long time as a teacher, with the oboist Henry Schuman as a soloist. Finally, Mamlok wrote a third version with chamber orchestra accompaniment in 2003. The three movements played without pause still hint at the structure of the classical solo concert, and the oboe also emerges with several solo cadenzas. However, the tonal language is decidedly modern, with frequent use of multiphonics and dramatic-noisy percussion. $60.00 - See more - Buy online

Published by Editio Musica Budapest (BT.EMBZ15085). English-Hungarian. Ãrpád Solti (born 1986) studied with Zoltán Jeney and Gyula Fekete at the Budapest Academy of Music, where he also studied piano and percussion. He has pursued advanced studies in Bruxelles and Gothenburg. His works - which range from solo pieces through chamber music and the award-winning orchestral composition Aktok [Nudes], which was premiered in 2011 at the New Hungarian Musical Forum's composers' competition - have been programmed featuring prominent Hungarian performers as well as the conductors Chelsea Tipton and Michael Francis and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. Solti composed the Sonatina between 2006 and 2008. The piece has since been added to the compulsorycurriculum for percussion students at the Budapest Academy of Music. These pieces for four timpani show classical forms blended with the energetic musical language characteristic of Ãrpád Solti. The first, Rondino movement demands highly precise pedal work. It is followed by a meditative Intermezzo requiring discipline and depth on the part of the performer. The final Toccata presents percussionists with an excellent opportunity to let their technical skills shine brightly. $15.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Poul Ruders MONODRAMAMONODRAMA dedicated to percussion virtuoso Gert Sørense...(+)
Poul Ruders MONODRAMAMONODRAMA dedicated to percussion virtuoso Gert Sørensen and commissioned by The Danish Radio was written in New York in the early winter 1988 and makes the centre as well as the middle of the tri-part opus called The Drama Trilogy. All three works employ the word Drama in their title Drama in the original meaning of the word: event. No specified event but a premonition or omen rather that something is afoot a free Drama-offer from which anyone may populate the stage of his private inner theatre. The first piece of the series DRAMAPHONIA for piano and chamber ensemble was premiered in London in the spring of 1988 by Lontano and Poul Rosenbaum. Thispiece is emotionally and rhythmically unstable as opposed to MONODRAMA (single-event) which is modelled from the archetypal idea of obtaining accomplishment from nothingness. The 31 instruments of the orchestra (no flutes and no violins or violas) are more or less wrapped around the solo-part to become one with that and thus emerge as one gigantic percussion instrument. The rhythmical patterns of the orchestral part more or less follow those of the percussionpart a single-event also on the rhythmical level. After 20 minutes climbing toward the peak of rage the composition casts its slough and is reborn into a chorale-like march and the struggle between totally depopulated sound-scapes and ferociously roaring sub-oceanic storms begin and the piece paces toward the abyss; rage becomes despondency New Rage as opposed to New Age the spineless worshipper of beauty without pain. The third instalment of the DRAMA TRILOGY the cello concerto POLYDRAMA will be premiered in Stockholm May 1990.MONODRAMA lasts aprox. 32 minutes.Poul Ruders

I was very excited about the opportunity and eager to start work but first I had to finish asymphony and a cello concerto. However when I wanted to begin writing the piece for Frankfurt inspiration became silent and remained silent for the next three years apart from the two works for chamber orchestra: I experienced my first writer’s block. This was not my first commission but the first time that I was seriously worried about a piece and started thinking about the commissioning ensemble and its expectations. If anything I held the Ensemble Modern in too high esteem. The ensemble is notorious for being a group of all-rounders who have already seen and done everything. However it was simply time for me to challenge my self-belief as composer and to search out what kind of composer I really am. Whatever the true reason was I still didn’t get anything down on paper. Nothing would gel. In 2008 a stipend from a New York foundation led me to an Italian lavender-castle from the 15th century far away from everything else deep in Umbria. The deadline for my first opera moved dangerously closer but was barely started. The next commission for an orchestra was also waiting in addition to the piece for EM: only empty sheets. When I came home six weeks later though I hadn’t finished anything the spell was broken. Behind the massive walls drafts had been created for what within the

Beethoven, Ludwig van Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra no. 5 E-flat major o...(+)
Beethoven, Ludwig van Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra no. 5 E-flat major op. 73 Beethoven?s fifth and final piano concerto is at the same time the culmination of his efforts in this genre and a reflection of all his artistic skill and expertise. The surviving manuscripts provide a clear insight into his working methods and his intentions regarding the work?s performance. The editor, Jonathan Del Mar, has closely scrutinised the autograph solo piano part and reproduced Beethoven?s sophisticated performance instructions for the first time in a modern edition. Among other things, this has special repercussions for the left-hand figured bass line of the piano part during the tutti passages. As with the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 to 4, the piano reduction appears with a separate solo part containing all the information needed by the soloist to conduct the ensemble from the piano. ? Many wholly new corrections in the solo and orchestral parts ? Piano reduction with a separate solo part, as was customary in Beethoven?s day ?
