When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart returned to Salzburg in January 1779 from his journey to Paris, his luggage contained a single church music work - an unfinished Kyrie in E flat major (KV 296a) together with sketches for the Sanctus and Benedictus (KV 296c). In 2015, at the suggestion of the late Armin Kircher, Johann Simon Kreuzpointner set about compiling a five-movement setting of the mass from this material, also drawing on an unfinished cantata in E flat major (KV 429). For the orchestration and text underlay, Kreuzpointner took his cue from Mozart's church music works. With this edition Kreuzpointner, an experienced church musician and composer, created a convincing and stylistically assured work, which he tried out in several performances. The result is a concise setting of the mass, good to sing, which does not present any great difficulties for soloists, chorus, or orchestra. The title Missa brevissima does not come from Mozart, but was chosen because of the brevity of the mass setting with its missing Credo. It also underlines the special status of this setting of the mass. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5180100.

The Missa brevis in C Major, for 4 vocal parts and organ, was long considered one of young Mozart's excercises in The Italian style of church music. Karl Pfannhauser, after his studies of Leopold Mozart's masses, was the first to discover that the C-major fragment had been incorporated into the latter's Missa solemnis in C Major. As Mozart was only 8 years old at the time his father wrote this mass, he cannot be deemed the composer of the fragmentary C-major mass that is listed as KV 115. The mass contains only the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, the last of which breaks off in bar 9. For the present edition our aim was to draw upon Leopold's own works for the missing parts. Score available separately - see item CA.4064200.

The final movement of the Sonata in A major KV 331 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Rondo Alla Turca, is one of the most famous pianopieces of all time. Once only familiar to musical experts, later a universal piece for all piano pupils, its opening melody is now even omnipresent as an alienated sinus tone-like mobile phone ring tone. Fazil Say's arrangement, originally created as an effective encore, follows on from this popularity. After the first eight bars havebeen presented in original form, typical elements of jazz superimposed on the still recognisable classical foundations can be discovered, such as syncopation of the top notes and ornamentation through chromatic blue notes, embedded in the at times frenzied chains of semiquavers. In the spirit of the work's improvisatory character, Say likes to perfom his Alla Turca Jazz in different combinations, for example accompanied by jazz singers of with orchestra. It may appear strange that Fazil Say, who was born in Turkey and - when not on tour - is still resident in that country, does not bring back Mozart's interpretation of genuine Turkish music closer to its own roots, particularly as many of his compositions such as Black Earth or the Violin Sonata are characterised by a subtle amalgamation of the Classical-Romantic tradition, Turkish folk music and elements of jazz. In a further Mozart arrangement, the ballet music Patara premiered in Vienna in 2006, composed on the basis of the Rococo-like theme from the first movement of the same A-major Sonata (wich enjoys almost as great popularity as the Alla Turca theme), Say utilised the connection which was absent in Alla Turca, albeit in the opposite direction. In the ballet music, the piano symbolises Western culture and the Ney flute Oriental culture, communcated atmosperically by austere percussion instrumentation and soprano vocalisation.

Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) was composed in the spring of 1786 to fulfill a commission from Joseph II for performance during a visit to Vienna by the Governor-General of the Netherlands. The visitors were meant to be entertained with a short German and an Italian musical comedy during a festival arranged on short notice in Schonbrunn Palace. The choice of composers fell to Mozart and Salieri. Both pieces spoofed the theatrical practices of the day. Der Schauspieldirektor, by Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, has a loosely-constructed plot that hinges on the vanity of opera singers and the empty-headedness of many traveling companies. Frank Lustig wants to create a new theatrical troupe, for which Herr Eiler is willing to supply money, but only on condition that his lady friend is allowed to join. In the course of the piece, appearances are made by other ladies with resonant names who want to be retained as singers and who attempt to outdo each other until reason is allowed to prevail.
