The present publication finally closes the gap in the availability of the three church oratorios of Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843-1900). With this late work, which he considered his most important, Heinrich von Herzogenberg set the musical high point of the 15th Conference of the German Church Song Association in Strasbourg (1899), and also of his entire career. The celebration of the harvest provides an interesting look into the stylistic diversity of church music at the end of the 19th century, and shows the composer's aptitude for dramatic presentation in a special way. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4019800.

The Christmas oratorio Die Geburt Christi op. 90 was first performed in 1894 in the St. Thomas Church in Strassburg and today it has been rediscovered. It is the first of a trio of so-called church oratorios by Brahms's friend, Heinrich von Herzogenberg. It was followed by Die Passion op. 93 and Erntefeier op. 104, all of which have been published by Carus in reprints of earlier editions. With these works which are partly neo-baroque, partly late romantic choral works, Herzogenberg commits himself to a new form of the Protestant worship service characterized by a high artistic level, but still near to the congregation. Allowing the choir to be accompanied by instruments outside the closed liturgical form of the service goes back to a concept of the theologian from Strasbourg, Friedrich Spitta. Since Christmas was a good occasion for the choir to perform independently, Spitta decided to put together the text for a Christmas oratorio and to commission Herzogenberg to realize it musically. Score available separately - see item CA.4019600.

Choral music plays an important role in the oeuvre of Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843-1900). The choral music of this Romantic composer has, until now, not received appropriate attention from the recording industry as would be justified by its significance within his complete works. This gap in the repertoire has now been closed with a well-received recording of secular and sacred compositions by ensemble cantissimo conducted by Markus Utz. The comprehensive appraisal of Herzogenberg's oeuvre is now being issued for the first time in a box with three CDs.

Heinrich von Herzogenberg's interest in the motet form based on a cantus firmus can be traced back to the middle years of his tenure in Leipzig (1875-1885). For three of the four chorale motets (Nos. 1, 3, 4) he chose hymns which were also known as traditional melodies outside a liturgical context and, in two cases (Nos. 3 and 4), were sung by both faiths. Each of the four chorale motets are concerned with suffering and death. With regard to the size of the choir, Herzogenberg envisioned a large mixed choir. Therefore, larger choirs can also sing the motets a cappella.

Following the complete collection of Heinrich von Herzogenberg's secular choral music (winner of the Music Edition Prize 2011), Carus has published Volume 2, the complete sacred a cappella choral works. The editor is once again Konrad Klek, who describes in detail the circumstances surrounding the composition of these works. In addition to the five cycles of Liturgische Gesange for various services during the church year, the original liturgical integration of the choral music is explained in detail. The four to eight-voice motet Mitten wir im Leben sind from 1881, composed in reaction to a catastrophic fire, is a first edition from the manuscript. Of the nine additional motets, until now two were not available: a festive five-part motet for Pentecost and the great double chorus for the silver anniversary of Mendelssohn's daughter, Lili Wach. Smaller choral settings for specific occasions (e.g., weddings) round out the picture. The Begrabnis-Gesang (funeral lament) for tenor solo and men's choir at the end of this volume, with his own words as well as music, is a very personal offering by the composer to the widow of his deceased friend, Philipp Spitta. All the works are also available in separate editions.
