Franz Liszt was a frequent guest of the acting cardinal at the Villa d?Este situated in Tivoli near Rome. His ?Jeux d?eaux? describe the glittering fountains part of the water features at the villa; in measure 144 Liszt alsoadded a quotation from the Bible to the musical text about the ?water of life? thus giving the work a religious context. Maurice Ravel who was also inspired to write a composition ?Jeux d?eau? (HN 841) thanks to Liszt gave hiswork a markedly secular accompanying text. This new single edition from the third volume of the ?Années de Pèlerinage? (HN175) is a counterpart to Henle's recently published Urtext edition of Ravel?s masterpiece.

Tv söngur is a composition for large ensemble written by Nico Muhly commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Tv söngur is a specific type of Icelandic two-part singing that can be found in texts as well as oral traditions Muhly?writes. Some of the tradition seems like much early music to stem from an exercise in voice-leading while some other examples are more social impromptu and secular. These arrangements attempt to frame the tradition through orchestration and wildly shifting contexts lighting effects and textures. The piece was composed in 2012 and lastsaround 5 Minutes.

(The Four Seasons)-Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands with Handel and J.S. Bach as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular he was without doubt the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works including forty-nine operas he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement Largo portraying time spent by a roaring fire listening to the rain pounding against the window. This new arrangement for brass band retains all the warmth of the original.

Instead of St Patricksimply converting the pagan warriors he is encouraged to listen to Ca lte’s stories and poems of an earlier time in which the saint delights.This secular/sacred osmosis is maintained unwaveringly throughout the entire text. By the end of the narrative one has witnessed not only the arrival of a new religion in Ireland but also a richly-recounted secular narrative map of the entire island: the peaceful and enriching shaking of two great hands.In preparing the libretto (the sung text) I have focused on only a few of the shorter constituent tales. This decision was born of the practical constraints of duration. I have however kept the skeleton albeit smaller of the overall frame in place. Finally for the sake of simplicity Ois n is removed from the primary narrative.The characters are not assigned specific voices. The narrative as a whole is carried by a persistently changing combination of voices and guitar. The one exception is Cas Corach the musician of the s d (underworld) who is most closely embodied throughout this setting in the solo interludes for guitar.The music itself is not ethnographically inclined; that is I have not attempted to reconstruct theories on Irish music of the period from which Acallam stems. Like his great madrigal anthologies of the 1580s, this collection for four, five, and six voices exhibits a wide variety of secular song styles of the time. Texts range from the conservative and somewhat moralistic to the risqu?nd playful, and musical styles from the homophonic, rhythmic manner associated with the Parisian chanson to the more polyphonic and expressive style of the Italian madrigal. Composers include local Antwerp musicians such as Pevernage and Cornet, Netherlanders working abroad such as Rogier and Monte, and Frenchmen such as Le Jeune and Caignet.
