ISBN 9790004313145. 9 x 12 inches.
The cantata I had great heaviness of heart BWV 21 is one of the most popular and beloved vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Intended for a performance on the third Sunday after Trinity as well as in ogni tempo (for any occasion), this work occupies a special place within Bach's cantata oeuvre. Particularly unusual is not only its approx. 40-minute duration, but also the work's wealth of forms and sounds. Matthias Grunert, cantor of the Dresden Frauenkirche, put together an entirely new piano-vocal score to this main work from Breitkopf's Bach Cantata series. His work is supplemented by a revised new engraving of the continuo part.Bach's great ,,Heaviness Cantata - Now with a new piano-vocal score by Matthias Grunert.

Only the text and the last page of the autograph score of the Christmas Cantata “Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe†BWV 197.1 (197a) have survived, beginning with the end of the 2nd aria. This, along with the complete surviving 3rd aria are found in parody versions in the Wedding Cantata BWV 197 / BWV3 197.2, from which this cantata takes its BWV number. For a long time there has been a fascinating theory about the missing opening chorus: could this have been the parody source for the Gloria in the Mass in B minor? The musicologist and organist Pieter Dirksen has pursued this, creating a four-part choral version largely derived from corrections made in the autograph of the Mass in B minor. He has underlaid this with the text of the opening chorus (the German translation of the Gloria). What results is a convincing version of the Christmas Cantata – with one of Bach’s best-known choruses as the prominent opening chorus and plausible solutions for the other sections missing in the autograph.

The Hochzeitskantate (Wedding Cantata) BWV 195 was performed by Bach from around 1730 at various wedding celebrations in different forms, and was evidently also lent out for performances further afield. The only surviving version of the work dates from the last years of Bach's life. The opulently-scored first part begins and ends with grand choral movements, and Bach scored both parts for soloists and for chorus. At the centre of the cantata is an exceptionally sensitive bass aria, probably one of Bach's most modern vocal compositions of all. A chorale movement (Nun danket all and bringet Ehr/ Now thank we all and offer praise) with obbligato horns concludes the cantata as the second part after the consummation. The Peasant Cantata BWV 212 is unique in Bach's cantata output both in content and musically. Although it belongs to Bach's homage cantatas, the text deals only indirectly with praise for a new chamberlain. Rather, the eloquent characters portray situations from rural life, which are also reflected in the music: Bach often drew on well-known dance movements and folk tunes. Because of this the cantata as a whole seems less 'academic' than his (surviving) sacred vocal music. Just two arias were composed in the typical da capo structure in which the musicians' abilities are put to the test. But because of the shortness of the other movements, the cantata is extremely varied. Picander's humorous text makes the cantata extremely versatile, far beyond its original purpose. Johann Sebastian Bach composed this piece around 1725 at the beginning of his Leipzig years. The character of the Fantasia is serious and grave. Even the interludes, despite their lighter texture, maintain an overall contemplative character. The four-part double fugue is an example of Bach's unique contrapuntal craftsmanship. He combines two notably contrasting themes: the first is diatonic, rhythmic and agile while the second consists of a descending chromatic line.

Bach composed this piece around 1725 at the beginning of his Leipzig years. The character of the Fantasie is serious and grave; even in the interludes a contemplative mood prevails. Its concerto form is strictly symmetrical: the main theme appears four times with three interludes between. The four-part double Fugue exemplifies Bach's superior contrapuntal craftsmanship as he combines two contrasting themes---one that's diatonic, rhythmic and agile, and another that consists of a descending chromatic line.

Bach's B minor Mass is among the greatest and most ambitious works of all time. The various stages of composition of the Mass occupied the composer for over two decades: beginning with the Sanctus (1724), by way of the Missa of 1733, to the remaining movements of the Ordinary, which were composed during his last years. Thus the Mass, in its wealth of forms with arias, duets, as well as concertante and fugal choruses, displays the essence of Bach's skill and personal style. The greatest musical work of art of all times and all peoples (to quote the enthusiastic Hans Georg Nageli, who first edited the Mass in 1818) and one of the most demanding choral works in the repertoire is presented by Frieder Bernius, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart in a stellar recording based on the principles of historical performance practice (Carus 83.211). The Fantasie opens with a long pedal point over which the upper parts unfold a solemn, declamatory theme. The energetic first theme of the Fugue develops an incomparable drive, especially in combination with its diverse, imaginative countersubject in eighth notes. This is a great selection for more advanced saxophone ensembles.

A lot can be learned from this sonata, not only in regard to phrasing and articulation. And it is an extraordinary pleasure to play and perform it---the movements could hardly be more diverse in mood and character.

The piece begins with a slow introduction---a three-part fugue exposition, with a theme apparently resembling that of the second movement. Due to the range and for better playability the sonata was transposed a half-step above the original key.
