Rhapsody In Blue is a major addition to the woodwind quintet repertoire.This version of Rhapsody In Blue includes a score and five parts and has been arranged for Flute Oboe Clarinet in B-flat Horn in F and Bassoon at an intermediate playing level.Many people know the famous Clarinet glissando opening to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue but very few know that the original version was scored for two Pianos and that the glissando was initially just an ascending scale.Joachim Linckelmann’s superb arrangement of this modern classic is based on this original version and with the exception oftwo solo Piano passages that cannot be realised by a woodwind quintet the entire work is presented.

Mixed Bag No. 29-Mixed Bag. This highly acclaimed series provides a real opportunity for woodwind players of mixed ability to play together. It will work with as few or as many players as you like! Each arrangement will work with just three orfour main parts. Part 1 is quite demanding but Parts 2 & 3 are easier. These parts can be played by just one or several players - it’s up to you!. Optional ‘filler’ parts are also included for beginners. These have very simplerhythms and notes (clarinet parts are all below the break) allowing young players to gain experience in ensemble playing. Mixed Bag gives you a score and double set of parts. Programme Note WHIRLS´ WORLD (1970) for wind quintet. 'Whirl´s World' was composed in 1970 as one of a series of works which explored the so-called musical ´difference-phenomenon´. This term (which I coined in connection with a series of lectures in California that year) indicates a motivic duplicity in which two - often very simple - melodic ideas come ´out of phrase´ with each other giving rise to a course of constantly changing conditions. In Whirl´s World the difference phenomenon is heard from the beginning where a three-note motif and a four-note motif are set against each other. It all proceeds lake a lightning-fast series of chess moves; first notenumber 1 of the three-note motif is moved then note number 1 of the four-note motif thereafter note number 2 of the three-note motif - and so on. This fast opening flows into a slow section in which the differences now appear as ´fluctuations´ between very closely related tones (of which one is sung by the musician). There is only one movement built up as an organic growth from slow to furiously fast whirling and back again to slow which can be heard as ´slow-motion whirls´ as a water-world of ripples and bubbles. All this is framed by the introduction described above and a corresponding conclusion in which the movement is now descending ending in the resolute bass full-stop. Per Norgård

Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) was a French flautist conductor and composer. He contributed significantly to the repertoire of the Flute and his Wind Quintet also remains prominent to this day. In 1879 Taffanel founded the Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments reviving the wind ensemble music of Mozart and Beethoven. His Wind Quintet in G minor had been composed three years previously in 1876 and is made up of three movements; 1) Allegro con moto 2) Andante and 3) Vivace. For the repertoire of this popular ensemble arrangement Taffanel's Wind Quintet is an essentialaddition.
