The instantly recognisable and ever-popular Meditation, from the opera Thaï s by Jules Massenet (1842-1912), remains a strong favourite in the classical repertoire, superbly arranged for Flute and Piano by French flautist, Paul Taffanel. Massenet first studied music with his mother before entering the Paris Conservatoire. He is best known for his operas, of which he composed over thirty. Thaï s was first performed at the Opera Garnier in Paris in 1894 and continues to be one of the composer's most performed operas. The famous Meditation, isan intermezzo, originally for Violin and Orchestra, which has since been arranged for many different instruments, making it a frequent concert piece. The arrangement for Flute and Piano remains in the original key of D major and displays the passionate religious intentions. Taffanel 's adaptions include breath marks, phrasing, changing octaves for some notes and articulation, among other aspects. Par GAUBERT. Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the Flute's repertoire, his Deux Esquisses being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opera, Gaubert was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his Deux Esquisses for Flute and Piano, which is made up of two movements. The secondof these, Oriental, conveys many technical features including flourishing semiquaver passages, a wide range, lyricism, intervals, chromaticism and complex rhythms. Reichert (1830 - 1880) performer composer and teacher is a household name with most flautists. He is known chiefly for his studies which integrate melody and harmony. This makes them more appealing to players and far easier to focus on than mere mechanical exercises. The majority of Reichert’s other compositions are less well known. Yet they are proof of his extraordinary virtuosity his imagination and his ability to express genuine emotion in his pieces. In order to cater for the rapidly growing interest in 19th-century flute music Schott has decided to re-publish these works for flute and piano.
