Edited for the first time based on the autograph.The only wind instrument for which Felix Mendelssohn wrote any solo works is the Clarinet. This Sonata written by a young Mendelssohn is genuine chamber music: the Clarinet and Piano are both used equally as a melody and an accompaniment instrument. The various playing characteristics of the Clarinet are not fully exploited; instead Mendelssohn focuses more on the cantabile character of the instrument.

'Klassik für Kinder' wants to introduce clarinet pupils to the beauty of Baroque, Classical and Romantic concert literature. Cautiously, not only original clarinet literature was taken up, but catchy tunes and themes from the opera (The Freeshooter, The Magic Flute and others) and the concert hall (Four Seasons, Capriccio Italy, Reverie and others) were used as well. The edition starts with a piece from the Renaissance period, followed by the great composers of the Baroque, European Classical and Romantic eras and completed by several discoveries off the common concert programmes (Blasius, Reinagel, Sullivan). In the 1870s Fauré wrote three songs which were originally not meant to be a unity but were later assembled under Opus Number 7. The first song is 'Après un rêve' a romantic rapturous song which like a 'Song Without Words' by Mendelssohn is perfect for making music with an accompanied solo instrument.
