In his use of authentic Englsh folksongs Gnostic texts and Vedic hymns one can discern Holst’s search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900’s. In 1916 hepublished Six Choral Folk Songs of which Hampshire folk tune The Song of the Blacksmith is the fourth.Holst uses the power of his mixed Voice Chorale to set the song among onomatopaeic syllables to evoke the smithy. The song isone verse long which Holst repeats not quite completely three times like the endlessly spinning thoughts of a rejected lover. There are many time signature changes between 4/4 and ¾.Gustav Holst has earned a place amongthe most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.

Best known for his exemplary exuberant orchestral work The Planets Gustav Holst’s diverse gamut also included hymns pastoral songs and folk music. He and the poet Robert Bridges became great friends over time their friendship blossoming after Holst sought copyright of one of Bridges’ works in May 1925. This is a terrific hymn set to a poem of Bridges' typical of the combined workings of these two great English artists and has been edited here for SATB mixed choir and organ pedals by Alan Gibbs.

This set comprises many of Holst's lesser known choral settings. Her Eyes The Glow Worm Lend Me and Come To Me are published here for the first time and the others were previously out of print. The B Flat Morning and Evening Service and Office for the Holy Communion was composed while Stanford was Organist and Master of the Choristers of Trinity College Cambridge and was already established as a composer and the energetic conductor of the Cambridge University Musical Society. It is for his church music that Stanford is best remembered and this first offering demonstrates his gifts very well.Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer music teacher and conductor who was a founder of the Royal Academy of Music teaching composition to some of the greatest British composers of the twentieth century among them Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. His own composition always displayed technical mastery and for a while he was a great figure in the world of British musical theatre.

Echoing the setting of Gustav Holst here is a new tune to some very familiar words with a new melody and a poignant beautiful harmonization. May be performed with either piano or organ. Duration: ca. 4:20.

Traditional Irish-This Christina Rossetti text is well known-especially through the settings of Gustav Holst and Harold Darke. Here Matthew Oltman sets the beautiful text for unaccompanied mixed chorus (divisi) on a traditional Irish tune it is great for concert or worship settings.

These four early and unperformed part-songs are among a number of vocal works which Imogen Holst edited shortly before her death in 1984.
