André Messager (1853-1929) composed Solo De Concours for Clarinet in 1899 as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece. Composed in three sections the cheerful first part contains triplet figures by the Clarinet that can easily be heard over the Orchestra. The second part has a strong French melody that can be heard as an exchange between the Clarinet and the Orchestra. A cadenza followed by trills ends this section and leads to the final part where the Clarinet stands out from the Orchestra with a rich melodic energy. André Messager is a previous student of Gabriel Fauré and CamilleSaint-Saëns who wrote numerous operas operettas and ballets. He was later appointed Commander of the Legion d’Honneur.

Composed in 1956 by Bohuslav Martinu the Sonatina for Bb Clarinet and Piano is a neo-classical piece. This work to be played as a single movement has been written in three different sections: Moderato Andante and Poco Allegro. The rhythms are reminiscent of a Polka and a March and the piece contains unexpected syncopation. Being one of Bohuslav Martinu‘s later works it was written in New York after he spent some time in Paris. Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a Czech composer and a violinist. Even though he was interested in different style including Romanticism Jazz and Expressionism he wrote mainly neo-classical pieces including 16 symphonies 14 ballets and 15 operas.

Claribel is a piece for Clarinet and Piano composed by Eugène Bozza. Written for upper intermediate players as quite challenging this melodic work is dedicated to Henri Dubois a French professor at the Valenciennes Conservatoire. Divided into seven distinctive parts Claribel begins with the Piano the parts being in the following order:  - Moderato - Andantino - Piu vivo - Vivo - Allegro Vivo – on the last measures of the Clarinet Solo - Meno Mosso - Allegro Vivo – for the final It also features a Clarinet solo startingat the number 11. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prize for the Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome.
