In Liszt?s autograph the melody is overlaid by the song text but he changes the title to ?Liebeslied?. This volume presents easy pieces for piano by great virtuosos. It unites the two greatest, and perhaps best-known, pianists of the 19th century, Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt. The technical requirements of these works are very moderate without muting the stylistic characteristics of these two composers. The ability to play an original composition by Liszt in the first years of lessons can be very motivating for the piano student. The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the Romantic reportoire. The first volume Series 1 include many of Liszt's most inspired piano works and are edited by the great pianist composer and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Hartel in Leipzig in 1910-11. Each set of Etudes is a highly successful work in its own terms and are all fiendishly difficult. The separate ' Mazeppa' isyet another working of one of the etudes from these sets. The individual etudes range dramatically in style from the delicate refinement of 'Feux Follets' to the startling bravura of 'Wilde Jagd' (both from Transcendental Etudes). Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality

In summer 1881 Franz Liszt composed a work that he called ?Valse Oubliée? (Forgotten waltz) in a letter to his publisher. The work is reminiscent of the appealing Piano waltzes that the composer usedto write when he was younger although there is a certain distance to the usual waltz style. Liszt by no means renounces virtuosity and elegance but rather infuses these characteristics with nostalgia and irony byembedding typical melodic and rhythmic elements of salon waltzes in innovative harmonically alienating progressions. In the years that followed he wrote three further ?Valses Oubliées? yet number 1 published here in a single edition has remained the best-loved of these ?Forgotten waltzes? by far.

In 1826 15-year-old Franz Liszt wrote his first cycle of studies which he actually wanted to be seen as a grand étude consisting of 12 different exercises as an 'Etude en douze exercices'. Each of these exercises however is an independent study dealing with a certain technical problem. Although they became a model of Liszt's great études ('Grandes Etudes') later these early works were still a far cry from the technical demands of their big siblings. They are all the more suited in advanced lessons as an excellent alternative to the more demanding studies of Czerny.

Originally designed for Voice and Piano Franz Liszt's Liebesträume were published in 1850 as lieder and solo Piano works at the same time. It is the latter ones that have become famous particularly 'Love Dream No. 3' which was to become one of the most popular pieces of the Romantic Piano literature. Existing autograph sketches are of only little significance to the final form of the works; the complete autograph is privately owned and not accessible. This is why the new edition of Wiener Urtext Edition basically follows the first edition of 1850 with its highly reliable text but not the second publication of the originalpublisher which is sometimes mistaken for the first one as the first edition of the second publication contains more mistakes than the edition of 1850. The present edition is completed by a clear notation and convenient page turns as well as informative commentaries of the Liszt expert Christian Ubber.
