Whoever pursues piano playing as a hobby mostly focusses on two things: playing from music, with as wide a range of works from classical, pop and jazz music as possible, and playing without the book, i.e. the ability to accompany melodies with chords, play songs by ear and improvise freely. In this volume, both topics are dealt with thoroughly and systematically. Whereas most piano methods prefer either classical or popular music, both kinds of music are well-balanced herein.Clearly structured chapters cover a variety of interesting topics: the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, popular piano styles (e.g. ragtime, boogie, rock 'n' roll, pop ballad), the blues and the genres of opera, operetta and ballet.

In his polonaises Chopin takes on the tradition of a genre recently endowed with the function of national dance. Three childhood polonaises constitute a replica of the model of the functional dance, while each of the later works of this genre has its own character: lyric, dramatic or heroic. Tied into the interpretations were subjects such as the struggle for freedom, the knightly and insurgent traditions and sometimes they came to have a symbolic function in Polish history. These works were edited by by I. J. Paderewski, L. Bronarski and J. Turczy ski.

A collection of solo songs by Einari Marvia (1915-97) edited by Matti Tuloisela. As many as 11 songs are here published for the first time. Einari Marvia contributed about a hundred solo songs to the Finnish Lied tradition established by Yrjo Kilpinen but drew his musical influences more from his teacher, Erkki Melartin, than from Kilpinen. Marvia turned for inspiration to ancient Finnish folk poetry and the nature lyrics of Finnish poets. His songs are characterised by rich musical, melodic invention enhanced by colourful, distinctive harmonies. The texts are taken from a number of sources, which proves that he read widely and was familiar with poetry.
