... Lajos Hernadi.

The Haffner symphony was composed at the request of Leopold Mozart for the celebrations at the ennoblement of Wolfgang’s childhood friend, Sigmund Haffner, in Salzburg on 29 July 1782. Mozart was under considerable pressure at this time with, amongst other professional commitments, preparations for the opening performance of Die Entfühtung aus dem Serail on 16 July, and the necessary arrangements for his forthcoming marriage to Constanze on 4 August. It is unclear from the surviving evidence (the relevant correspondence between Wolfgang and Leopold at this period is incomplete) whether the symphony arrived at Salzburg in time for the Haffner celebrations. The symphony was first performed in Vienna, under Mozart’s direction, at the Hofburgtheater on 23 March 1783 in the presence of the Emperor.

Thekla, the portable piano of the Mozart family, now gathering dust in a dark loft and remembering past - and better - times, has a lot to tell: when Wolfgang made his first composition attempts on the piano and father Leopold made the first great concert tours with Wolfgang and his sister Nannerl in a coach, about the concert performance of the children before Empress Maria Theresia in Vienna (1762), about the trip to Paris and the rough crossing to England, and, finally, about the return to Salzburg in 1766. Mozart is described as a boy who has quite ordinary problems, who gets homesick on his trips and who longs for friendship. In addition, the book gives a short preview of his further musical oeuvre.Numerous - sometimes full-page - pictures as well as an illustrated history of his life paint a colourful portrait of Mozart. With the help of a map, the reader can even follow Mozart's travel route.

A pastorella (the Latin pastores means shepherds) had evolved during the eighteenth century as a work to be incorporated into midnight Mass that dramatised the role of the sheperds in the Nativity story, recounting their wonder at receiving the news of the holy birth in their fields from the angel and their arrival at the stable with gifts for the baby Jesus. It was a popular genre for 150 years in the eastern parts of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The horn-call motifs of the village herdsman, used to round up his cattle in the mornings, were frequently part of the composition: so indeed was the instrument itself, in order to enhance the realism of the scene.

Pietro Nardini was the most important pupil of Tartini regarding both violin playing and composition. Like his teacher, he attached special significance to the beauty of sound and the -suitability for singing, as is shown by reports of his contemporaries. Leopold Mozart, for example, wrote in one of his letters that he had heard a certain Nardini and that there could not be heard anything more beautiful in the tonal beauty, purity, harmony and in the singable taste. The two concertos in A major and F major consist of three movements with the traditional tempo order quick-slow-quick, each movement giving the soloist the opportunity to play a solo cadence.
