Franz Liszt composed his lyrical-meditative organ fantasia on the Ave Maria von Arcadelt in Rome in 1863. In contrast to his major virtuoso works this charming genre piece can even be easily played on smaller (double-manual) instruments even without swell-organ and reeds. The 'Liszt organ' at the village church of Denstedt near Weimar which was built by the Peternell brothers in 1859/60 and has survived in its original state may be used as an example. It did not become known until in 1927 that the Ave Maria attributed to Jakob Arcadelt (around 1505-1568) was a revised version by the composer Pierre-Louis-Philippe Dietsch (1808 1865) who used the melody of Arcadelt'schanson Nous voyons que les hommes which he then harmonized into his own Romantic four-part choral setting and to which he added the sacred text as a contrafactum. Our separate edition wants to make this rather 'poetic' yet quite easy-to-play organ work without any major technical difficulties accessible to a large circle of interested people.

The Three Sets of Eight Interludes were published between 1946 and 1952 and display Thiman’s early 20th century tunefulness and grace. Eric Thiman was a 20th century composer teacher and Organist who was also an advocate of amateur music-making. He was a prolific composer of church music and Piano and Organ works and his craftsmanship and gift for melody were much admired. He was director of music at the City Temple in London. As an educator he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and he wrote many books on harmony counterpoint and musical form.

?For me Sebastian Bach is the be-all and end-all of music; true progress lies and resides in him alone.? It was with these programmatic words that Max Reger prefaced his answer to a survey ?What does Johann SebastianBach mean to me and what is his significance for our time?? posed by the editors of a magazine in 1905. Reger had already proven his adoration of Bach with his magnificent homage to the composer written and publishedin 1900 and probably the best-known of his works for Organ. It is an established work in the concert repertoire of well-known virtuosi but is also increasingly being performed by ambitious church musicians. Henle has nowpublished this sea of notes and performance directions in an edition with a particularly clear and readable text.

Théodore Dubois (1837 1924) composer conductor organist and pedagogue was one of the leading composers in Paris during the 19th century. He was compared with Delibes Widor or Lalo. However his compositions are unusual for his epoch;
