This chart features the sound of a New Orleans funeral marching band historically known as the Second Line which follows behind the family and casket. It’s a time for celebration coming after the initial mourning period. Lots of fun to play in the style of a funky, marching Dixieland band. The harmonic form is the Blues and there is room made for soloing both inside the ensemble and for featured soloists. Includes an optional flute part.

This never-before-published Thad Jones composition is a interesting medium tempo swing chart with just a touch of a blues march feel. First recorded live by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band at the Village Vanguard in 1967, this very playable chart features a great double shout chorus separated by a 4 bar drum fill. With 16 bar blues changes to work with, Thad’s simple muted trumpet melody turns into a roaring masterpiece of full ensemble excitement before returning to the simple muted trumpet theme. Written solos are provided and this unique chart features two 1st Trumpet parts (High / Low) and includes an optional flute part.

Recorded by the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band on the album March Of The Tadpoles, the score notes for this beautiful work explain two major performance options. First, the introduction may be replaced by a freely-improvised piano solo (as originally recorded on the album); this makes all sax doubles unnecessary. Second, the main solo feature for tenor sax may also be played by alto; extra substitute parts are provided. Duration 5:20.

Strut your stuff with the excitement of a New Orleans style second line street march. Everybody gets to play the melody! Backgrounds for the solo sections are strong on their own, so the chart can be performed without soloists if needed, or open it up for more fun! There’s space for the drummer and bass player to shine, too. Playable with reduced instrumentation, and includes optional parts for clarinet soloist and tuba bass line. Both the band and audience will love it, and go out whistling the tune!
